Gen I FJR1300 Shop manual usability

I can't decide if having a FJR1300 shop manual is worth the money spent. If you have one is it written clearly enough to understand? Anybody glad or indifferent having a shop manual?

The manual for the '08 is readable/useable/understandable and I always like to have one for any of my bikes. You can get yours here a little cheaper and it's the official Yamaha one through a legal and copyright sensitive source: Clicky

I've bought my last 3 cycle manuals from them.

Absolutely. And the very first thing you need to do is take it to your local FedExKinkos, have them cut the binding off, hole punch it for a 3-ring binder, and then place the entire contents in a 3" 3-ring binder with tabbed sections. It is now entirely useable..!

It is not as simplified as a Clymer's Manual and has much technical information.

I'm glad I have mine when I've needed information.

There are some websites that may help you if you aren't going to delve "deep" into the FJR. May I suggest you "bookmark" them.

It is not as simplified as a Clymer's Manual and has much technical information.

I'm glad I have mine when I've needed information.

Valid question, Nightshift. Think about this: if by having the manual, you can do just one single thing yourself that you'd otherwise have to have a dealer do, hasn't it paid for itself? This is really a no-brainer. If you do any of your own wrenching, you should have a GENUINE Yamaha shop manual.

If you are going to perform any complex service on your bike you need the service manual. You don't really need it for changing oil, spark plugs, or tires if you read the information available here and in the links madmike provided.

There was a time when you could find service manual pdfs for free on the web if you looked hard enough for almost any bike. I don't know if that's true any more. The books are copyright protected and it is illegal to copy them.

I had one of these with another vehicle and really liked it.

When I was going to work on something I would just print the pages I needed.

If they got damaged by grease or coffee I could just reprint them.

I always order a factory shop manual when I buy a new bike. Always use them, and have never regretted buying one.

That is about what I paid at University Motors including shipping. I am not sure that they discount as well as they used to. I do not intend to work on my bike but this manual will give me comfort it I try to. I also figure it will have value to any future owner especially if the manual goes out of print (I do not intend to sell for 15-20 years). I would buy now while you know they are available.

Nope, they are all illegal. Yamaha does not produce anything other than a paper manual. Unfortunately, the digital age is raising generations who do not see illegal copyright infringement (music, movies, books, FJR manuals, etc.) as stealing. When I saw my children heading that direction, I stopped them and made sure that I walked the line to set an example.

Sounds like Yamaha is missing a good deal.

My dealer says when they get their manuals in, the 1st thing they do is scan them in to their computer and then put the paper copies in storage.

They could save folks a lot of time and paper if they would sell them on disc.
