Thanks Lar, I think the header is going to be a birthday present to myself. Not sure what mufflers I'll get, the holeshots seem a little too obnoxious for me. Maybe I'll try using the stockers at first. Curious what the sound is like with just the cat's gone.

It would be interesting to try that first and quantify the heat impact of just the exhaust system before I go crazy on the radiator.

Where did you get the aftermarket heat blanket, I wonder if I could add something in addition to the stock '04 one which isn't much. (Pretty thin)

Hey Falcon!

I've been reading this series of posts with intrest, as I own a Gen I also. Heat isn't a mega problem with me, but it is there!

I'm particularly interested in how you make out with the Holeshot head pipe conversion and how it may sound with the stock mufflers on.

Please keep us/me posted on your findings.

Don'tcha just love this forum? I swear, more often than not, my guts ache from laughing at some of the off the wall commentary these dudes come up with! Gots to love it!!

Good luck, J-DADDY

There really isn't a stock heat "blanket" as much as a piece of reflective tinfoil.

There's a guy in NY state that sells heat Blankets for 1st gens on eBay. I'm probably going to pick one up this summer myself.

I can't remember what I had for breakfast this morning, so I'm never going to remember where I got he heat blanket  I THINK I got it on eBay. It's actually about a half inch (maybe slightly less) of insulation with foil on one side...cut to size. Try searching the forum. I'm sure SOMEONE has a line on aftermarket heat blankets.

The Holeshot header with the stock cans sound phenomenal. I had that setup on my bike for a couple of weeks while I waited for new Holeshot cans. I doubt you'll be disappointed by that setup and it will give you a good feel for how much heat is eliminated by removing the cats.

Happy birthday to you :glare:

I bought mine from Smitty141, the cruise control and recent 50cc guy. I dunno if he still duz 'em, but it worked well. You could PM him and ask, I s'pose. Thick blanket, with metal foil on the engine side. IIRC was 20-some-odd bucks last summer. What with inflation, fuel, etc he's prolly got'em for 50 or 60 bucks now.

Edit: Hell, for 60 bucks I'll sell ya mine!

I have the header with stock muffs-sounds very nice, a lot like Staintunes on the stock header. Combined with the usual heat fixes (Crowmeat etc) the heat issue isn't.

Thanks gents (used loosely) :yahoo:

I wanted to thank ya'll for the responses!

I think I'll spring for the Holeshot head pipes when I can afford 'em!

The gas tank heat blanket insulation kit can still be had on ebay for $30.00+$8.00 shipping. I ordeded one this AM.

Keep ridin', J-DADDY

All the other "fixes" to Gen-I bikes, like holes in the panel under the radiator, and probably even your bikal nudity, reduce airflow through the radiator.
The saga continues...this morning I got a hair up my butt to remove the lower fairings. so I did, and installed aftermarket turn signals to replace the missing stock ones. As you noted, the lower fairing helps build pressure in front of the radiator, forcing air through it. With the lower fairing gone, the engine did run at 3 bars more often below 60mph (back mountain carving and stop n go suburban riding) but ran at 2 bars and felt much cooler at highway speeds. Interesting how remarkably cool the bike ran fully naked, but I don't want to go there again.

At this point I'd like to continue down this path for a while. I might build a simple air dam around the perimeter of the radiator to improve it's efficiency. I am investigating gutting the cats and disabling the PAIR system, and following that up with a PC III to richen up the mixture and reduce EGTs. I'm going to have to pass on the aftermarket header for now, got too many other commitments for my fun money.
