Most of you are probably familiar with Geocaching; an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called "geocaches" or "caches") anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook and "treasure," usually toys or trinkets of little value. Today, well over 800,000 geocaches are registered on various websites devoted to the pastime. Geocaches are currently placed in over 100 countries around the world and on all seven continents, including Antarctica.[1] Wikipedia

I've done a little myself over the years, but have never really taken it seriously. This morning, while sitting on the can I thought, Hmm, what if the FJR community started Geocaching tours, or rides? How much fun might that be? Unfortunately, many of the treasures are hidden in hiking trails or off the proverbial beaten path. So why not set up a regional 'FJR' specific treasure sites in FJR friendly areas such as somewhere near the 'Largest Ball of Yarn', or near Niagra Falls, or near Dodger Stadium, your favorite restaurant, or the like. Some more difficult treasures could be in obscured areas such as off the highway in the middle of nowhere, or maybe behind a tree on some little 1 lane road out in the boondocs. The point is that we get the chance to ride, solo or in groups, search for treasure, and leave a note for the next suspecting rider, or just say "Hey". Who knows, maybe even plan a whole road trip around Geocaching.

Any takers.

I remember seeing something similar on another site at some point.

Basic concept was that someone posted a photograph of their bike in front of a specific landmark. Clues were provided as to the location, and whoever was first to find that location, snap a picture of their bike in front of it, and post it on the thread, then got to provide the next location for others to find.

I think it was set up so that there were different games for each different region/state, which makes sense.

Old age prevents me from remembering which site had it, but I'll try and dig it up again.

It was a cool concept, providing yet another excuse to get out and find new places to ride, and I think something like that might work quite well on here. But only if I get to ride with Lara Croft, and change my name to Womb Raider.

It's pretty popular at advrider.com. They call it Tag.

What wld72 explains (known as Tag) though sounds fun, does not require the use of a GPS. Not allowing that idea to fade, I was considering more of a treasure hunt of sorts. That is, FJRForum.com can offer a riddle/map of sorts that require us to think about where/what it's located. Of course there are some narrowing fields ie. state, county, city, maybe even coordinates, Geocaching is more about interpreting the riddle than desiphering a picture. Hmm, Maybe a both/and statement would work better. Maybe the one creating the Cache determines whether it is a riddle or a picture?

Just a drunk throwing some ideas around...Whadayouall think?

If you live in Arizona...they are already doing the AZ Photo Tag on Sport-Touring.net
Looks fun!
That's where I saw it. Thanks Tbird.

Seems to me that after identifying what you think the location is from the provided clues, you could use GPS to navigate to the location. The only difference I see between this and the original idea is that you would be taking a photo instead of finding a cache.

And if I told my wife I was going out looking for cache, she'd want at least half of it for shoes!

I think you're drunk. :alcoholic:

It might be a little late for us to start this in our neck of the woods, Sport, but the off-season would be a good time to set up such an activity for the coming riding season. I'll drop you a PM.
