Pardon for the naiveity, but I'm not all that good with electrical requirements.

I currently have my Gerbing gear wired directly to the battery, through tankbag and into suit.

Is it possible to tap the Gerbing harness into the running light powersource under the seat? It would be a much cleaner installation. I'm not all that experienced with wiring (junction boxes and the like). My backoff unit is connected in this way, but I'm sure it's not pulling as much power as the heated gear.

The heated gear will likely pull much more power than the fuse on the light circuit can handle.

For a good "clean" install check Powerlet's FJR-specific outlets.

SportBikeEffects reseller page

They make single and dual kits. I ran one of the sockets from the dual-kit off of a relayed circuit to the battery and the other to a Heat-troller installed in the dash so I can adjust the heat on my vest while my wife has independant control of hers.
