If you've been riding for less than 17 years then you probably don't know what it's like to get hit by a cicada at 70mph.

They are large, noisy, hard-hitting flying insects. They are harmless - you can catch them in your hand - as long as you're not going 70mph. At that speed it'll feel like a bullet.

Don't take any chances. There will be literally millions of them flying around. Highest concentrations will be in Ohio, PA, W. Va., and Va.

Be careful out there.

PS - anyone think this should be copied to the Northeast forum?

Fortunately this isn't a Northeast issue except for the South Shore of Massachusetts (Boston to Cape Cod) in 2025.

I've been through a 17 year hatching in Missouri and Alabama. It's quite a show to see and HEAR. As Jay says, hitting these large hard shelled insects is like getting shot.

Witnessed one of these in Tampa/Lakeland 20 years ago. Incredible. Went to a weekend soccer tournament with my sons, and the parking lot was literally covered with them. You couldn't walk to the fields without squishing at least one with every step.

Pretty disgusting, after you process all your "marveling at nature" thoughts.

We had our with them in Oklahoma last year. They get crazy loud in large groups!
