Givi E52 owners

I have been contemplating buying a Givi E52 to use on my Michigan trip in a couple of weeks.

On the Yamaha site it says that you should not use the top box and the saddle bags at the same time because of the wieght issues.

Those of you that have Givi top boxes, have you traveled one up with the top box and saddle bags fully loaded?

Have you traveled two up with the box and bags fully loaded?

Is the Givi easy to remove like the saddle bags are?

Did you experience any negative handling issues or was the bike exceptionally top heavy? I do not plan to go ripping it up with the bike fully loaded but I am looking for some input on what I might expect with the bags and box fully loaded. That will help in my decision on whether to buy one or not.

General comment on top cases. Keep the load light in the top case, you'll really notice a change in handling if you overload it. Turn in is much faster, easier to pop wheelies and the front end is kinda vague. Set the rear shock on firm. The rear rack is only rated for 11 pounds.

I rode 300 miles from the Dragon with 60 pounds on the rear rack / trunk. Had a happy wife with all the stuff she bought but Robbie the Racer was out of the question.

Easier. Much easier.

No. It's a big bike.

I think you're more likely to notice buffeting from crosswinds on the slab than to feel an effect from the weight. I mean, people ride fine two up, and I can't imagine what you'd put in there that would weigh as much as a passenger, even accounting for the extra leverage of the bag being behind the axle -- and if you did, I'd be more worried about the rack than the handling. You can take it off if you're going to a track day, but for average riding, it's fine.

I just took a couple hundred mile trip to WI with the top box and side bags fully loaded and with the girlfriend on back. Not lots of weight inside....just clothes and shoes and a bucket of strawberries she had to purchase along the way. No big handling issues....and the strawberries were in good shape too!

There is a ton of responses in the archives. Much better cross section of owners with the Givi top cases. More opinions especially those that two up.

I have traveled with the Yamaha top box and with the side bags loaded. I believe it says on the box, along with the 11 lbs, not to go over 80mph.

I can say a little weave started when I exceeded above the 80mph but the handling was fine in turns etc with no noticable effects.

+1 for me with my E48. At highway speeds & above(50+) feels like a little wind gust back & forth. Not unnerving but not rock steady like without the top box. This is with box loaded/unloaded and 1 up. It doesn't bother me enough to make me take it off....Later,,, De

I still can not believe i packed that much crap for a weekend trip!

or you can go ahead and get the top case, I've used the top case a tail bag for a back rest and the saddle bags....

So other than being careful, since you will be top heavy and if the bike starts to lean you may fall over.....

I rode out to CO last year without a topcase and I was gone for nearly two weeks. I was able to make it through the trip fine but I only got rained on hard one time. I had to go the laundromat a couple of times.

I think I am going to buy the top case for my MI trip so I can keep more things dry. I do not plan to load anything in it except clothing type stuff.

What ever others said. And no ill effect while riding loaded one up until you hit triple digit on a wide open road. No, I do not travel at those speeds most of the time.

I have the Givi E52. No problems when loading about 10 to 15 pounds. Have not loaded it more than that.

I do not seem to have any issues at 100+.

No 2up riding here for any distances.

I just installed Shad 48. Went on 300 miles ride with wifey. Both side saddle loaded with water, jackets, food and emergency repair kits. Top case empty for helmets.

No problem. Average speed 80 mph. No handling problem.

Had the E52 a number of years (now V46, but only cause it looks better, IMHO anyway), all riding 2-up with side cases and E52 fully loaded.--------- 20lbs in each side case -- 22lbs in top case -- no problem over 100mph. BUT - I can imagine a problem with those weights and riding solo, as the backdraft tends to whip around the top case. 2-up no problem.
