I also had an issue with my Givi 357. I found that the V46 box tended to rattle quite a bit. It was secure but made quite a bit of noise going over bumps. It turned out that the four posts that support the box were apparently not tall enough to make firm contact. I ended out adding bits of rubber (1/8") top the top of each of the posts and problem was solved. I can't say for sure whether the problem is with the rack or the V46 but no further issues after the better part of 100,000 miles since I did the fix.

I sell the Givi rack in 2009 and go for Sw-Motech, look and design its much better.

The problem I have with my SR357 and E52 top box is that the box jiggles enough that the lights blink on and off because the contacts on the rack/top box make/break. I have cleaned the contacts and it still happens. If I try to heighten the bumpers like Ross did, the box doesn't jiggle, but it is almost off the contacts and the lights kinda blink. My only thought is to hardwire the lights so this doesn't happen. Haven't done that yet.

This details the gap problem I had with my GIVI SR357 rack and how to correct it - and what to do if you already took it too far like I did.

Man... I get that you like to make videos, but 5 minutes of gabbing about something that could be covered with about two paragraphs is a bit much.

This serious "Quality Control" issue that you say you've just discovered has been talked about quite a bit on the forum already. Many other folks have discovered the same misalignment, so I do not think it is just a matter of them sending you the wrong spacer.

Some folks are just tightening up the rear 3 bolts first, and then doing the two front most bolts afterwards to apply tension to the rack. They believe that GIVI intentionally has made the rack where it will be under torsion to improve the weight carrying capability of the rear subframe.

I also stuck a washer in (just one) but put mine underneath the spacer so it wouldn't be visible. And my bolt seemed to be plenty long enough even with the washer, so I don't really think that was the reason you buggered your threads. Sounds to me like maybe you just got it cross threaded.

The problem with that (type of) rack is that it places all of the weight of your trunk, and anything that you put into it, on the stock (plastic) luggage rack, which (working from memory here) is only rated to carry about 5 or 8 lbs. The case itself weighs most of that. If you overload that rack you will crack the cast alloy subframe underneath that was only designed to carry the weight of the rear shrouds and fender, hence the low weight rating of the rack.

Installing a Givi SR rack, quality control problems and all, will reinforce that pot metal subframe with steel pipes and increase the load capacity greatly.

Contacts?
Yes. Griff has the optional lights in his trunk, and Givi makes a quick disconnect lighting setup so you don't have to manually connect and disconnect the wires.

A possible solution for you, Griff, may be to do the security pin mod I have done on mine. I don't have the lights, just installed the pin for, well... security. It does tend to hold things a bit steadier than just the spring loaded latch does. If you used a nut and bolt in lieu of the clevis pin you could snug it down as tight as you wanted.

Since I mounted my security pin exactly where your light contacts are located you'd have to do yours on the other side.

Thanks Fred. Yeah, I need to figger out a way when the top box latches the back end comes down tight. The contacts are very clean right now - there's just enough movement to make them break occasionally. Just anudder ting to mess with.

You can't please all of the people all of the time ;) Some say I talk to much, some want even more detail lol! Thanks for the opinion man, but nope, not cross threaded. The fact that feedback is mixed, some people's fit and some don't, mean to me it's not a 'feature' that it doesn't sit level.

Well, since you appreciated my opinion, here's another one: This is an FJR Forum where we talk about the FJR and other things bike related. I, for one, like when there is content posted here on the forum that can be read and discussed. When your entire post is just a link off to your blog space or videos, well that just feels a lot like spam to me.

But, that's just my opinion.

I know you are not trying to sell us anything on the forum, but constantly linking away to your web content still feels spammy. It probably doesn't help that you have a three links in your signature line that go off to web sites that you are getting advertisement money for.

Makes me wonder; Are you getting additional web statistics (for those advertisers) for every FJR Forum guy that clicks through and views your videos? That would be pretty sleazy if it was true.

Thanks for the opinion :) The admins are in control, and obviously they have no such issues. And no, put down the tinfoil hat ;)

Some people just like to be jealous and pissed off at the world. Oh well, another to ignore :) Back to helping those that appreciate the info!

Thanks for the opinion

Fred's has been a contributor for a long time and doesn't knee jerk. Spending time being a "member" would inform you of his contributions and might have tempered your reply.

Neither of you speak for the admins.

There's a good point being made about little or no supporting content here for forum members and little more than links elsewhere. It might be an issue.

We're researching it WRT using this forum for earn money from its members who have been given free access and no ads for a reason.

Keep this concern in the back channels where it belongs (and not in a thread "flame war").

About Signatures

Kaelaria, Ignacio and I have been in extensive (back channel) discussions about this issue.

IMO it's been very constructive and professional. K has been congenial throughout. Again, I think we've resolved "intent" to our satisfaction. Because "perception" is a thorny issue (not the least because the more eyes on something, the more chance for differences to occur and the entire membership's eyes come to bear on public posts).

K very quickly updated his signature block once he was directed to the guidelines. Thanks!

Keep links in signatures related to motorcycles; preferably the FJR but we all know our riding interests are often more inclusive of other brands or moto groups
It's also an example (sorry to pick on him to take advantage of this "learning moment") of how failing to read the rules and guidelines doesn't give anyone a pass for failing to abide by them. They're published so we don't have to repeat them for each new member.

The ad revenue he gets from his site requires additional actions on the part of visitors. If they don't click on the side ads, then they aren't part of his earnings chain (typical GoogleAds stuff). As explained to K, we don't want to whore out the FJRForum when we don't charge for memberships and don't serve ads ourselves.

Each individual is left to deal with ads (on all sites) as they see fit. Click through, ignore them, or get an ad blocker as you see fit. We'd have more heartburn if the links went to commercial earnings without choice. It's a tightrope for sure but broadly apply the posted rules for commercial work whenever you're unsure.

I concur with Bounce and appreciate Kaeleria's back channel cooperation. I'm hopeful the discussion will get back to him being a forum member and FJR owner first and foremost. And thanks FredW for pointing out the issue.
