The extra lane on the uphill of some of those state highways is a friggin blast. If conditions allow, I you can let 'er rip a little on the inside lane, knowing that you have the outside lane to pull up on if things get too twitchy.

I have yet to ride Monarch Pass, but I can say, the penalty for failure is VERY high with Monarch Pass.

I've driven it several times, including twice with the FZ1 on a trailer. My father in law is terrified of driving on Monarch Pass, and we are looking forward to the next Fast and the Furious movie because they apparently spent a good deal of time filming on that road. I can't wait for him to see folks drifting through the turns on that road. The rest of the movie will suck, but that will be awesome.
