Anyone want to show off the San Antonio Texas Hill country to a Northern California FJR Rider on 10/25 - 10/26?

Hi, I'm going to Austin arriving Sunday 10/22 w/ 3 riders from work arriving @ 1230 PM, none of us have ever been there. What can Me & the guys do for 4 hours Sunday in a rental car - I think it is too late to rent bikes for a 1/2 day.

We are staying at the Omni hotel downtown. How about nite life after the conference - none of us consume more that 2-3 drinks at nite (usually during dinner) - we are 48 to 60 years old, slowing down on the "party thing". We all like live music - but not country (dog died, wife left me, truck broke down). Honky tonk music is OK & R&R is preferred.

recommended Good 3 to 4 star Resturants in downtown? (company is paying for it)

The conference is over Tuesday 10/24 and I was planning on staying Wed & Thursday 10/25 & 10/26 to rent a bike and tour the TX hill country, where ever the fu@k that is.

Can I rent something other than a Harley for a resonalble price - Harleys are $110.00/day - good price compared to Kalifornia.

Where Should I go - I DO NOT Camp.

BTW - If I'm on a Harley you're gonna have to stop and wait while I catch up.

As far as Austin, you're going to find all sorts of great places to hang out. The restaurant at the Driskill (sp?) Hotel on Brazos used to really be top notch. And for live music you just go around the corner and start walking down 6th Street. I remember Maggie Mae's used to be a great place for rock and roll.

If you decide to get bikes, you definately need to make it out to the hill country. Here's my ride report from this last spring:

The route that is outlined will take you on a lot of the best Hill Country roads there are for motorcycling. Unfortunately, they are quite a ways outside of Austin. It's do-able, but plan on doing a 400+ mile day. Best to make it two days if your going out what we call the 33X roads out by Leaky, Vanderpool, Campwood area.

There are some good roads to ride around Austin, but it's getting so crowded anymore with traffic we tend to stay away from riding Austin. You can head out 2222 (turns into Bullock Hollow Rd) past 620 until it "T's" into 2769 which is often called Volente Rd. Turn left until right before the dead end and you will see Lime Creek Rd, only turns to the right. Fun little road that many local sport bikes like to shred. Again, it's become more and more crowded though.

Take Lime Creek to 1431 and head west towards Marble Falls. Stop in the Blue Bonnet Cafe for some good food. You can then head north to Park Road 4 and run it to Hwy 29 and then head back to Austin the way you came. That would make a good solid afternoon ride.

Or you can head out Hwy 71 to Hamilton Pool Rd and follow it out to Hamilton Pool, or all the way to past hwy 281 to hwy71 and back to Austin. Or, if you feel like some miles, take Hamilton Pool to 12 S into Dripping Springs, Hwy 290 W to 165 S into Blanco, TX. Then 281 S to 473 W to 1376 N to Luckenbach, TX where Willie, Waylon and the Boys hang out . Nice little place you can check out the old Post Office, get some BBQ and probably hear someone playing a guitar. Wouldn't be surprised if you ran into other scooter trash there.

You could just take off and explore the area outside of Austin out by Lake Travis up to Marble Falls, or South down by Wimberley and even further towards Canyon Lake. Probably find some decent roads to ride on a Harley.

I'd invite you for our weekend ride of the 28-29. Leaves out of Kerrville and will cover about 400 miles of the better Hill Country roads and we'll be spending the night in Leaky, TX. But sounds like your heading home by then. If you were here on a weekend and not weekdays I could find time to lead you around some. I'm out of San Antonio though, but know all those roads very well. Ride them most every weekend.
