I am sure it is safe etc...blah blah blah, but I guess for me the whole cost vs whatever thing escapes me.
If I had to worry about the cost of consumables for any of my vehicular conveyances, it would be a good indicator not to have that conveyance. YMMV

That reminds me......I gotta order a set of tires LOL
For me the cost wasn't a big thing, it was the inconvenience. Every time a big ride came up, I would have a tire with a couple of thousand left on it and a 3 to 4 thousand mile trip planned. I've thrown away a lot of tire that is mostly worn out, but might have lasted longer.
We've all been there too many times, but a new MC tire will put more smiles on your face on that big ride.
When I started riding in the 1960's we didn't have ABS, radial tires, 100 plus HP bikes, etc. etc.

How was it possible that we enjoyed riding these underpowered motorcycles with such poor tires and brakes.

Or how in the world did my grandfather enjoy riding that 1930's HD.

Perhaps some people really enjoy riding on two wheels and others just enjoy riding the latest and greatest.

{I've got to stop reading these darksider posts I am getting bitter, sorry}

things I accept in life:

- I will never time the stock market to buy low, sell high

- The availability of fresh coffee is inversely proportional to how tired I am when I wake up

- I will never plan the length of a ride to co-incide with exact time my rear tire should be changed, and I'm ok with that.

I like random, chaos and if the $50-75 difference between and CT and a MT ends up parking me one day? Buddy I guarantee you I will have bigger problems going on.

peace, out......

Gotta love those who haven't tried Darksiding. All kinds of advice why they haven't..

Well, I apologize again for my peevishness earlier. And I assure you I am over it.

I would like to say that when you buy a high end MT the difference between my $70.00 CT and your ridiculously priced MT will be a LOT more than 50-75 dollars.

AND when you buy your SECOND MT at that inflated price, you're now talking about $300.00 more than my CT.

And when you buy your THIRD overpriced MT your now up around $500 dollars more than my CT.

And since I install my own tires, and you likely don't, we're probably talking more like $700.00 by then.

And I won't even go on to discuss the fourth or fifth overpriced MT. And your MT is likely to blow out if you run it at too low a pressure, and likely to blow out if you leave on that proverbial long distance trip you talked about with a partially worn tire. etc. etc.

Whew, kept my cool. Happy Trails to you, Phil

Good for you Barb. But that's exactly the position I was in when I first got interested in Darksiding. Gas or Tires, pick one. Ride less or ride more. I had time, money was harder to come by. And for those not paying attention to the math, one CT lasts as long as FOUR moto tires, or more, depending on your flavor. At the time I would wear out a set of Avon Azaro tires in 12-14k miles. That was as short as two weeks in rally season. Plus the cost for mount and balance at a shop since I wasn't doing my own tire changes.

Equal cost for a CT or a moto tire in my case, but 1/4 as often. At the time I was riding 45k a year.

One fellow demanded an explanation of the CT use and then ranted about how he changed his tires every season whether they needed it or not, because it was a SAFETY issue. I asked how many miles he rode a year and he told me he really tried to get in at least 4k mile every year. When I explained I rode 45k that year, he just replied, "oh"... and shut up right there.

Funny thing, when I moved from the FJR to the Super Tenere, I was able to find tires that lasted a consistent 12k again. Bias Ply! Sport Touring tires have long transitioned to Radial, but adventure touring tires can still be found in bias ply. I ran bias ply tires for the IBR because they would reliably last over 10k. (I still did a mid rally tire change at the second of three checkpoints, just in case).

Thanks for stirring the pot Barb. You did good.

many moons ago I had a friend with a '66 427 Corvette- he put white vinyl fender flaps on it [with red reflectors].. last I heard he was in a Prius and never shuts up about his gas mileage...[stirring the pot boss]..[[the winter is long]].

Goodyear Tripletred Assurance has been great for me for the first 30K miles, lots of life left in her too.
Seems the Goodyear Tripletred Assurance is going the way of the Exalto and G-Max. Goodyear reports they have discontinued this tire. There are still some in the system to be had!

Keep Going!

I bought a Goodyear Assurance a couple of weeks ago in Gatlinsburg, Tenn. when one of my tires on my Civic started to delaminate in the mountains. It was on the discount rack for half price because they have been discontinued. Good for me, bad for those who liked this type of Goodyear.

Why was I in the mountains without my FJR? It rained the whole weekend and I am a sissy. LOL

Was yakking yesterday with some Can Am guys. They have some good looking car tires on their machines. One guy was lamenting the loss of the "old" G-Max, same tire I started with. I think I'll check out some of their forums....

You're making an assumption that using a car tire makes riding less satisfying. For many of us that is simply not the case.

The BFGoodrich G-Force comp-2 has been working very well for me

Some good info, thanks!

There is no assumption. I've been listening to people personally that have been there, done that, went back to MC tires, and aren't putting a CT on again. I understand it's the right thing to do for some people, just not me.

@John d - talking to people that have tried a CT, then changed back, after only trying one tire is less useful than you may believe.

Many that I have personally spoken with did several things wrong that negatively impacted their experience.

Poor tire choice, (went with the cheapest tire possible w/o any regard for how to choose a darkside tire).

Put it on, then removed it after only one, a few rides or less than 500 mikes.

Wrong tire size for the application.

Wrong tire type for the application. (snow or summer tire, or worse, extreme high mileage tire)

As I've always said, it's not for everyone.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people with no direct, first hand, experience feel the need to speak out negatively about this topic.

I tried with an Exalto and ran it for maybe 25,000 miles or so. Went back to a motorcycle tire and a couple years later, I ran Gmax for 12,000 miles more. Tried a range of pressures and road types/conditions. Never loved the CT except for on long highway trips. They weren't awful but significantly diminished the enjoyment I got from riding. Lower cost for sure but not worth it (to me).

Safe to say I gave it a fair try.

Yeah, I agree it ain't for everyone but the verbal spouts from the non-believers gets old real fast. I went the opposite of you, starting with the G-Max then going to the Exalto. The Exalto is IMHO a significant improvement over the G-Max, I can see why it was such a popular choice when it was available.

I'm still a 50/50 CT/MT tire kind of guy. Having a spare rim makes it easier to take a CT long weekend at the coast and a MT long weekend in the mtns. I'm fortunate that I live about 3 hrs from each
