I'm heading south in a couple days, and will write a story about this trip when I get home, but I remember crossing the bay bridge southbound last year and hitting full panic mode as I aproached the toll booths. I had traffic blasting by me and didn't know if I had to stop or what. At the last minute the toll operator saw me panicking and just waived me through! Can someone educate me about paying the toll. Do I just have some cash sticking out of the tank bag or what?

Pick your time of day and skip the toll:

Golden Gate Bridge Carpool Policy

Vehicles eligible for free toll passage between the hours of 5 am to 9 am and 4 pm to 6 pm, weekdays, except on seven observed holidays – New Year's Day, Presidents' Day (third Monday in February), Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Independence Day (July 4), Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day – include:

Vehicles with three or more persons

Motorcycles, as defined and designated by the CA DMV, which includes three-wheeled motorcycles

Buses

Two-seater vehicles and vehicles with rear axle dual tires do not qualify as a carpool on the Golden Gate Bridge. Carpools require three or more persons for two primary reasons: to help alleviate traffic congestion and to remain within the budgetary requirements of the Bridge District.
