When I bought my FJR last month the bike had 25,500 miles on it, but no firm service records.

With no idea where I stood, I decided the prudent thing to do would be to go ahead and check them. As you know, this job requires a significant amount of disassembly to get to the valve train. As I work the valve cover off the engine I find a notation that the valves were checked in September of 2011 at 20,800 miles.

Good to know, except some dummy only recorded this on the INSIDE of the valve cover.

Considering that, it is probably for the best that you do it again. Someone dumb enough to write the service date on the inside of the valve cover probably can't be trusted to operate a feeler gauge. Plus this way you'll have a record of where they were now, so you'll know the health of your engine better the next time around from how much it has changed.

I'm sure that information was recorded else where, most likely on a service order that you didn't get. I'd say the fellow wasn't so dumb in writing it down where it didn't alter the cosmetics of the bike. Who would want the service record scribed on the exterior of the bike, anywhere?

I would think the top of the valve cover or somewhere in that vicinity would make a bit more sense.
