I was coming up the South River Road from around Clarksburg today, heading north toward Sacramento. Looked in the mirror and saw these two headlights behind me, gaining fast. I was at the speed limit at the time, just 35 (just passing through some little community) so by the time I got up to the 50 mph sign, they were right on my tail. I accelerated as fast as I could, but man, those two Harleys just blew right past me. I was really surprised. I was able to keep them in sight but couldn't make up any ground. Oh, I didn't mention, I was riding my new KLR 650, and sticking to the recommended break in procedure of keeping it under 4K rpms. And I had my 13 year old son on the back.

But the good news is, I finally caught and passed them BOTH. At the Freeport Inn. First bar we came to since they passed me, matter of fact.

Hell, they promote the mix of alcohol and motorcycles. Our local grocery stores have beer displays (Miller Light I think) with cases of beer stacked up around a new Sportster. WTF does that say to the kiddies?

You did just fine, especially with your child on back.

(Not a stellar contribution, but I will try harder.)

LOL! Somewhere, in a local bar this morning at around 6am, there would have been a HD rider bragging about how he burned a Ninja. We were at a light together and he had the pose. He wouldn't look at me, concentrating fiercely on getting ready for the off. To give him a break, I put the 650 into neutral. The Harley rattled away from the line amidst a thunderous roar. After putting my bike into gear, I got up with him, half a bike length behind. That was hard to do, because the little Ninja just wants to go-go-go and I was asking it to sit and stay. Roll over and lie down!! More noise. More vibration. Once I got to second gear, the game was over. We'd reached ten over the 35mph limit. I don't need a performance award to tell me that the Kawasaki is a nippy little bike. Mr HD clung tightly to his shaking handlebars then had to engage airbrakes for the next light (i.e. flailing feet for 15 yards before the line). It was with the greatest pleasure that I came to a quiet and gentle stop (using that shiny lever-y thing by the throttle) and THEN put one tippy toe down.

Isn't it fun to commute on a bike?
