I recently got a route for my GPS from Keithaba. The route is his planned roads for the "Kentucky & part of VA" ride.

Since it wasn't created in the route version that I need I asked my bud, Jeff Ashe to save the maps down to version 1 gdb using a freeware program called GPSBabel. (we've done this before w/ routes that Jeff created & it worked like a charm) My unit (Garmin 276C) apparently uses V1 gdb files.

I loaded the V1 file onto my unit. When I attempt to navigate the route, I receive the message "Truncated Route" & then the message "Route Error". I know what truncated means but I can't quite figure out what has happened. THis is a message that I've never seen. Has anyone experienced this message before & has a suggestion of how I might fix the problem?

TIA, Heidi

PS, I've already visited Garmin's website to find the answer. No luck. Also tried recalculating the V1 route in my mapping software, retried it with my unit with the same results.

Best I can suggest is that you check your base maps and make sure they are consistent with your downloaded route. I found that due to the limited space on the data card, my map area sometimes did not cover the route area if the route was off of the basic US main roadway map. I can't remember if that prompted a Route Error message or if it simply re-routed me to 'known roads'.

Hmmm, about an hour ago I was wondering if my problem might have to do w/ map coverage. I am pretty sure that I have the maps downloaded for the area... but you know, there might be one little map that went undetected when I originally loaded the maps. I'm going to take a closer look at this tonight.

If anyone else has suggestions, please post 'em.

Thanks mister, Heidi

Not the problem. Does anyone else have suggestions?

Can you recreate the route with mapsource or directly on the 276C?
Yeah, I suppose I can (sighhhh), seems like what I'll need to do. I was trying to not have to do that. Lucky I have a couple of months, huh? I'm not good w/ using Mapsource to plan a route.

I've see this (or errors very similiar) on my GPS V, my 2610 and a 276C. It's generally caused by Mapsource and the GPS using different algorithms to calculate the routes. The common way to cause this error is to have a route planned out in Mapsource (or any other software), upload it to the GPS and then make sure that there's a missing detail map somewhere along the route. Since the basemap isn't as accurate as the software maps you upload, when you run off the software map, the road you are on may not be in the same place on the basemap... or even worse, it may not even be on the basemap at all. The GPS gets confused and doesn't know how to route from the basemap to the software map. That's one way to get the error every time.

The other way is to simply have routes that don't match roads. If I generate a route with mapsource using a 2006 map, then send it to a friend who has a 2007 map uploaded to his GPS, it's a fair bet that smthng along the route will be slightly different. The roads your on don't match the route, the GPS gets confused and you get the error again.

Easy fix... Use waypoints instead of routes. Make a handful of waypoints along the major stops of your route, then let the GPS figure out the route itself. This is also an excellent method when you don't have to take a dedicated route... you know where you want to go, but don't really care if you veer off a mile or two to get there.... or there's an accident ahead you want to avoid... or a road closure... or you want to go a few miles east to avoid a storm... whatever. With a "route", as soon as you veer any distance off the route, the GPS pretty much gives up. With waypoints, you can always reroute around anything.

Going back into my technocave now. ;)

Well howdeee Jonathan,

I was pretty sure that you'd fallen off the face of the earth. How's it going?

Thanks so very much for the tech stuff. I'm going to try something different where this GPS stuff is concerned. Really, I'm going to completely get the hang of this thing one day.

I agree with what smthng said about waypoints. I usually plan my routes using plenty of waypoints and then use the individual waypoints if I have to change my route for any reason along the way.

According to the 276C Owners manual(Pg115) the error can occur when the uploaded route from another device has more than 50 waypoints or a complete uploaded track will not fit in memory. You may have to go into the route that you received and eliminate some waypoints if there are more than 50, or there may not be enough available free memory in your unit.

Look here;

Hmmm,

I thought that my unit allows a LOT of waypoints. I mean as in a couple of hundred or the like. Will also look at this tonight. Thanks Pete

Hey Heidi,

You need one of those cheap *** Magellan's like mine! It's so stupid, it dosent know if its out of memory or not! I named mine Dufass!

Along with getting yourself a bigger memory card (you know they are very inexpensive these days), you should logon to garmin and see if there are any software updates for your unit. I just installed their WebUpdater and found a new version for my 2720 that fixes a couple of minor problems I was having. I also got the latest version of Mapquest.

I have plenty of memory for what I'm trying to do. The card in my unit is a 128 meg. Not the biggest by far but plenty big enough for a couple/few states. So for sure, the memory card isn't the problem.

Unit will handle 3000 waypoints. I don't think too many waypoints (50) is the problem.

I think that I'm going to try the "update" suggestion next. I know for sure that my unit isn't using the latest updates.

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys. I certainly do appreciate it.

These units are great when everything works as it's supposed to. When something is screwy... well, it's a huge pain in da' patootey.

The latest software for your unit is V5.20 as of Jan. 2008. You can get it HERE...or, you can call Garmin(1-800-800-1020), they have very good support in the times I have dealt with them.

Thank you, thank you, thank you Pete!
