Grease your rear brake lever pivot shaft.

I noticed my milage was down on the last trip. I did another TCLOCS inspection and found my rear brake was draggin becasue my rear brake lever was not returning all the way. I sprayed some WD-40 on it and got it working properly but it happened again last week. I finally had some time this weekend and pulled the lever out. ( I rode in the rain alot her in alabama so that probally had something to do with it. ) The shaft was bone dry and very dirty inside the housing. I cleaned it out and lubed the shaft up good with Moly grease and reinstalled it. I have overlooked this this step during maintenance so I thought I would share. There is a recess in the center of the shoft so applying grease to it was pretty self explanitory. Mileage is back up now. FYI I have a 2005 ABS bike with only 14K miles onit.

 
Yeah, I've done that maintenance. Would like to add that a little lube on the side stand bolt/mechanism is also a good item to maintain.

 
Thanks for the heads up on this one. After all the wet and road crap from EOM and then again this weekend it probably needs some attention.

Yea, and everyone following you was probably wondering why your brake light was always on

 
That happened to me on a trip to the PNW about a month ago. It was after 3 three days of merciless rain. Some WD40 got me rolling again and some white lithium when I got home seems to have taken care of it. I'm not sure what you mean about "shaft was bone dry and very dirty inside the housing" - maybe its's GenI v. GenII thing.

 
So where are the pics??? Have no idea what you mean by "a recess in the center of the shaft".

Hadn't thought about this but makes sense. Adding V-Strom hand guards which will help protect it but will add some grease when installing the guards.

Don't know how I missed that! See, pics would have tipped me off on this!

My mind automatically was thinking hand lever as I have the pivot shaft on the table in front of me! :rolleyes:

Covered several times before, including my contribution here.

Good reminder for those of us in the northern hemisphere

And remember, WD40 is a cleanser, not a lubricant; it washes away very quickly in the rain.

 
A much more permanent and practical fix is to:

Drill, tap and install one of these...

Just make sure to cover it with a rubber cap...

I've carried cans of WD-40 around long enough. Pumping grease in, keeps the crud moving out.

I have already pickedup a grease zerk and was planning on installing in in the same location pictured above. And yes my brake light was on the whole time. Sad part is the other riding riding with me noticed it and never said anything.. Dang st1300 riders.

Oh I dunno. Strom hand guards down in front of the footpegs would probably keep your feet warmer and drier and would act as frame sliders and footpeg feelers as well. Nice deal.
