While driving my truck today a saw a V-Star (I think - Harley looking Yamaha) rider make a hand signal to make a (left) lane change on the (Calif) freeway. At first, I thought that looked kinda weird, but after thinking about it for a while, I realized that I noticed him much more with the hand signal than with just the signal on the bike. Infact, I don't remember seeing the L/ turn singal on.

How many of you "REGULARLY" make hand signals when making lane changes on the freeway/interstate?

And would you try to do a hand signal to make a right lane change (left arm up)?

Just wondering.

When running the freeways in Los Angeles or other crowed roads, I use the handsignals both left arm out and bent 90* for right turn. Always use the flashers also. I agree most will see the handsignals more often than flashers.

Many years ago I had this conversation with an old timer and he had a good point in that if someone is looking at the bike from any distance with a bike its hard to tell if your giving a left or right blinker with the bike as narrow as it is. I'm like Dave, use both. I'll even make a rocking pointing motion with my hand to help get the attention needed. PM. <>< :D

Assuming they can tell with which finger you are pointing...things could degenerate rather quickly. :dribble:

Hopefully I would not cause any road rage with this signaling motion as this is a problem and being on the bike would probablly lose if I couldn't get out of the way in time. Or maybe they would think that I'm just number one or that I'm displaying my IQ if any confusion existed.....PM. <>< :dntknw:

I commonly hand signal left in heavy freeway traffic, I don't do it to the right... I'm not sure someone to the right and just behind me would notice a hand signal.

I do it in group rides.

I use hand signal to change lanes to the left. Also, I always look over my shoulder, left and right, to make sure I'm not missing someone in a blind spot.

I use hand turn signals almost all of the time. (I also use the bike's signals) Even when not in heavy traffic. If there are cars around I use them. Also, a big help when riding in a group.

I use hand signals quite a bit, along with the bike's blinkers. I especially use them in heavy traffic like coming home from work where I feel that two or three tail gating vehicles back might see the human arm where they might not be as likely to see the signal blinker.

As Heidi said earlier, I also use them in casual riding with friends. Spirited riding is another story.

Most my riding has nothing to do with highways. I'm usually turning my head to check my blind spots before every lane change. I've used a left hand signal mutiple times but not the right. A few days ago a cager on a cell that pulled out in front of me got the one finger salute though.

I routinely use them in group rides. When riding solo, I *generally* signal left lane changes, but not right lane changes using hand signals.

I use them combined with eye contact, to emphasise when I need to get in quick. I also use them when driving the van, which is harder to get into a space in the next lane. A bit tricky leaning across to the other window though

I find that pointing works too, makes them realise that you ''want that bit right there''.

Good thread.

Old habit, I use hand signals in conjunction with turn signals almost 100% of the time. Also when riding lead, I signal other riders of road hazards, slowing traffic, etc. I expect the same of the people I ride with. To me it is just common sense and courtesy.

Ii use the left hand on 2 lane roads, especially if there is much oncoming traffic and there is a cage behind me, also staring in the rear mirror. Turn sigs, left and right with mirror check and head swivel on the slabs.
