Titan's recent posting about running w/o bags got me to thinking about this again. I usually run w/o them too. However, I was along when luvtoride conducted her recent bout of ditch surfing, and I gotta say, though the left bag cover was trashed a bit, the unit as a whole stood up to the abuse and appeared to work in concert with the frame slider, functioning quite well as a rear slider. Might have come in handy had her leg been under there at the time (it wasn't as she had exited to the rear (ahem) at that point). I've been mulling this over ever since. So has anyone entertained such thoughts or made this observation?

EDIT: I now see that KM agrees? Anyone else?

My thoughts exactly..and that is what I posted in the original thread.

I have only dropped my bike in my driveway..( 3 fucking times so far...lol)

and the bags do a great job of keeping damage off the bike, and off me. I have not dropped the bike with my wife on , but am sure the bags would help protect her legs as well.

The last time it fell over (damnit) I noticed the only parts touching the ground were the rubber strip on the bag, Skyways slider, and the edge of the mirror housing. Thus, this was all that sustained any damage.

I know many "clean up" their bags by removing the rubber strip, but I think I may look into making it thicker and wider.

In an older thread with a similar theme one conclusion was that the bags could help in the event of a side impact from an auto.

You're so nice Jim. Exiting to the rear. I just plain call it bailing. Hahaha!!! Ya' know, I've been thinking about the same thing... the bags being good sliders. At the very moment of my surfing, I had thoughts of losing my left leg on the edge of the asphalt.

Same story. Slipped on oil patch. Slight scuff on the edge of the mirror. Rubber strip and slider. It worked well other and my pride.
