2009 with 4,200 miles. Initial cold start for the day everything is fine and runs fines. Then when I start it after it has warmed up, 1 bar or 6 bars and anything in between it may roll and roll without starting. After 3 or 4 tries it will start. If I start to open trottle while starting it helps. I understand this is kinda normal. Then when it starts and I take off it sounds muffled and sounds like it it running on 2 cylinders and doesnt have enough power to fall out of a tree until I reach 2200 rpms or so. Then it smooths out and runs fine. Sometimes when it starts fine it still runs bad until the 2,200 rpm range. Bad thing is it doesnt happen all the time but seems to be getting more frequent. Problems started 2 months ago or more. The bike has also died on downshift twice. Bought it new 3 months ago with 1,000 miles on it. It was a factory rep. bike. Dealer had done the 600 mile service on it and cahnge oil the day I picked it up. I change oil at the 4,100 miles. Still has factory warranty. Gonna give the dealer a call, just didnt want to go into this blind.

That sounds like a fuel mixture problem to me. I just had a similar problem. You need to do several things to make it run really correct.

1. Check the throttle sync. (You could skip that with such low mileage)

2. Set the idle to 1200 RPM's

3. Do the Barbarian Jumber Mod. https://www.g-mac.net/fjr1300/gen_2_fjr1300_bjm.pdf For some relief.

4. Or skip the BJM and put a Power Comander on it for the best cure.

Definitely make sure your idle is at least 1100 RPM. This will *probably* cure most of the running drive-ability issues you're having. Concerning hot start problems if you haven't already, try a different brand of fuel. Although not on the FJR, I've had a couple cars that did not like a specific fuel formulation. Changed brands and the hot start problems went away.

Good luck...if it continues to worsen, a trip to the dealer is in order.

Lift the tank, pull the heat blanket and T-Bar and make sure all your spark plug cables are seated well.

And seated well means that the cables are seated well in the plug caps and the plug caps are seated well on the plugs.

You can pull a plug wire (ONLY by the cap...NOT by the wire) and "screw" the cap tight on to the wire, then re-seat the caps.

Heck, it's easy to do and it's free. Might be worth checking out.

I had that experience, once with my 09. My situation at the time was very hot weather around 95, the bike was sitting out while having lunch. Higher altitude, we were up at Lake Arrowhead. My guess at the time was that the gas in the fuel rails got very hot, and this made the gas not atomize properly. After it was running and I started to move it cleared up.

I have set the idle up 3 times so far. Did that the 1st day I had it. It will not hold. Always drops to around 800-900 rpm. Thought about the fuel getting hot but when it does its thing if I dont go above about 2200 rpm it runs like ****. As soon as I finally decide to get above that point its like a flip of the switch and the power is back. Will look into the plug and wires , makes sense. Thanks for the suggestions.

I have had the same issue a few times and everytime was after sitting in the hot sun (+90's) for a while. It only takes a mile or two to clear up.

On Cali model FJRs only, the rough running after sitting in the sun is caused by the carbon canister. SShank - Is your bike a Cali model?

Do these symptoms sound familiar? https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?s...09&hl=rough

IF the idle won't hold, something is amiss.

DO NOT add or modify anything until the dealer makes it right under warranty.

Don't give them any opportunity to point to a modification as the root of the problem...keep it OEM.

Yep...my 09 does that after it heats up and sets in the 90+ degree weather... just goose'r a little and she'll straighten right up...

Not a Cali bike. For the most part it does not sit in the sun. Hate to get my *** burnt. Will not add anyting to bike. Bought it to ride and enjoy as factory and dont want to add mods. Talked to dealer and it goes in next week. Of course over the phone they are leanng toward TPS but will not know until they look at it.

At lest they are suspicious enough to check things out. If it's a TPS or crank sensor, they're easily replaced.

I'm not aware of a spate of sensor failures (like the TPS issue with the Gen I) so yours could be a unique problem.

Please keep us updated.

Well bike has been in the shop since July 3rd. Talked to them today and they said they finally got it to have the problems. However, they still have no idea what is wrong. Grrrrrr. They are still digging.
