Added to this HD "rocket scientist" guy is the ridiculous amount of sport bike riders I've seen this summer wearing the highly protective T-shirt/shorts/no gloves getup. Reminds me of the inane statement: "I don't wear a helmet because it's safer." Stupid is as stupid does.

My response would be: "Thank you! Good to know there are those out there keeping natural selection alive and well."

I look at this as it's his call. Many people think I am nuts and take to much risk by riding. We all decide how much risk we want to take. I use the best gear I can afford to buy to minimize my risk. I don't stop at a bar and I don't drink and ride. Numbers show that you are 40 percent more likely to die in an accident if you don't use a helmet. And over 40 percent of all deaths the driver was legally drunk. Now riding a HD is about the life style as much as the ride. The bad boy look. What you save on gear you spend on HD logo clothing. In Wisconsin when your out for a ride and pass a bar you see multiple HDs out front. And almost no one on a HD will put on a helmet. These riders decide how much risk to take based on how they value there life just as I do. I just think it's funny how society looks at risk. If I drive my car without a seatbelt I can get a ticket. Yet I can ride down the highway at 55 mph with only sun glasses and shorts and not be violating the law.
It is his call, but referring back to the opening post, it appears that he instigated the conversation. If he wants me to accept his right to make his own decisions, he needs to accept mine as well.

How much better would the world be if more people understood this incredibly simple concept?

Bingo! That's why I've started trying to lead them into saying they don't care about my opinion. it's pretty easy; just ask them "What you you think if I said ......?" They'll virtually always answer with some for of "I wouldn't care." I can then tell them they should understand that their opinion's not important to me either and maybe we could at least agree on that.

a fella stopped a buddy and me one day as we got off our bikes and asked the "gear" question ( it was ~95 and crazy humid). we pointed out that or gear had mesh panels that allowed decent airflow, while still maintaining a decent level of crash protection.
his answer?

" wow, i'd like to have something like that, but i don't think Harley makes anything like it"

our answer?

Seems to me I recall a time when Camel cigarettes were marketing a specialty package with Harley badging.

Seems to me I remember TV commercials with doctors telling us the benefits of smoking.

He is "Old School" Harley as he puts it....

"If it ain't Harley it ain't ****"

He won't ride with any other bikes other than Harleys...

Funny though... Last week he called me to come pick him up on the side of the road...lol... His Harley breaks down about every month or so...

I did pick him up, plus drive over an hour to take him and his bike home, through tolls and he did not even OFFER to pay me gas money or tolls (Which I would have refused if he did actually) so that wont be happening again.... nope

And if it is a Harley?

I don't normally criticize anyone else's bike. I actually have friends who ride Harleys and enjoy riding with them. That's the beauty of the FJR; it's a great ride at any pace.

But if they set themselves up like this ......

Next time he calls you to pick his sorry *** up when he breaks down, just remind him that that's part of the "life style" too!

Granted, as you say you would refuse the offer, but when someone drives an hour to do you a favor that isn't owed to them, you make the offer. Sheesh. Some people.

This guy, as an individual, is a tool. He acts neither as a friend nor a helpful soul; it's apparently about his oversized, compensating ego. Why bother to be any more than an acquaintance with him? Big John pretty much said all there is to it:

Phuck him, don't waste your breath or your brain trying to argue with an imbecile.
.
If you gotta associate him with a larger clan, ain't it ridiculous that for a bunch of people who identify with the HD marketing hype of supposed rugged individualism, so many are stupid sheep who want everyone to pledge allegiance to the flock and its image directed rules?

BAAAAAAAA !!!

I spent almost 16 years as a part time employee of a HD dealership and that mindset was too typical of most of the customers I dealt with. I started there due to my being a Buell owner, never owned a Harley and most likely never will.

More customers than I can count gave me that line all the time about riding with a full faced helmet, jacket, and gloves. PA is a helmet choice state but I never needed a law to tell me to do something intelligent. During my time there I watched customers, some of whom became friends, suffer through injuries and on a few occasions, loss of a friend or loved one through their own poor choices. Some came around to the ATGATT mindset, some quit riding, and some will never change. I wish the best to all of them.

As others have already stated, "You can't fix stupid"

Next time this guy yanks your chain about gear.

Show him this

No road rash, jacket took all the punishment.

and about helmets.

They don't stand out in the picture, but those starches are pretty deep. Think I would have been scalped with no helmet.

Because of the gear the only blood letting as the top knuckle of the little finger a spot about the size of a match head, where the road burned though the padding on the glove.

In 2008 I washed my frontend out on slick pavement at about 45mph. No biggie. I slid down the road and through a ditch and wound up in a driveway. I rode back home. The helmet didn't even look that bad, but on closer inspection, I realized the chin bar was torn almost all the way through on one side. That's when I realized that could have been my chin.

I expect nobody here needs convincing. But tell this to a helmetless rider, and he'll answer "I don't plan to crash." If it were only that simple, huh?
