What a PITA! The electric clutch shifter has to be removed.

Should have taken 20 minutes and I dabbled on it two hours, lost a fastener. What a pain.

Just a rant...maybe someone else had a better experience.

 
now you know you have to remove the shifter it will only take 20 minutes next time right??????

Just did it yesterday. Not as eay as my old cruiser, but not too bad.

It's what replaces the clutch lever on an AE!

I changed mine a couple of weeks ago and it wasn't too bad, but I have a clutch lever. <_<

 
Changed mine out a couple weeks back. It was pretty straightforward. (I've gotten to really hate working on shit over the past ten years - but this didn't even rank on the nuisance scale). But as the last couple posts read I have a clutch lever...

While I was in there I decided to cut the "snorkel" out of the airbox - it added a bit to the ambience of the Intake Draw...

I enjoy hearing her breathe a bit more now...

I had a bitch of a time fighting the wiring loom to get to that last frikkin screw!

 
First time I did it on the AE there was some head scratching, and more than one "they can't seriously want me to remove the shift actuator to get at this thing can they?!?!?" but now that I've done it a few times I can generally have it on and off in only a little (maybe 10 mins?) longer than it would take on an A-model.

It does seem an odd way to place things that makes basic maintenance more of a PITA, especially when other stuff is seems designed for easy access during maintenance (like the oil filter/drain plug). On the other hand, where else could they have put the shift actuator?

Since the clutch actuator was added many years after the bike already existed, one should think of it as an afterthought in this regard. It was much easier to add as is rather than redesign the entire bike to get the air filter out on maybe, the other side. Yes, it's in the way, but it's only the first piece that's in the way. There's the body panel, which needs the seat to come off, then the air intake, and eventually you find an air filter. The shifty-clutchy thingie is just one more domino in the chain.
