Has anyone measured the temp of their elect grips?

I just finished the install of Hot-Grips on my '06 FJR and they just don't feel that hot. I ordered the variable heat controller and installed that in the little square on the left where the Yamaha heat adjuster goes. I took the bike for a twenty mile ride and took my Fluke non contact thermometer to measure it with and got 90 degrees on each side. It was 72 degrees out on my dash display. It just didn't seem like much heat from the grips.

I have them powered by an auxiliary fuse block with a relay and it is direct wired to the battery - correct gauge wire used.

Sounds like something's seriously wrong. What brand of grips do you have? Sounds like that's not nearly hot enough. My aftermarket heated grips from the Show Chrome company get so hot I can't hardly stand it. But when it's 25 degrees out, all that changes. They're just right. i'm guessing that when the temp is 72, mine will hit at least 130 or so. Normally, they do continue to get gradually hotter over the course of about 15 minutes... for what it's worth.

Any chance you have them wired in series?
I have them wired parallel - but the instructions suggest they can be wired in series.

I also wired the ground back to my fuse block, not to the frame.

Parallel will be hotter.

I see a resistor is included for low heat. I doubt you would want that installed if using the controller.

I would check that thy have full system voltage available and perhaps wire them direct (around the controller) to see how hot they get.

The resistor isn't used with the vari-controller.

I like the idea about bypassing - will try that first thing tomorrow.

Well - it was my doing -

I had the grips wired in series.

The owner of the Hot Grips company was in communication with me late last (Saturday) night with the path to figure this out.

I'm impressed with their concern for the customer.

Those grips get really warm and the vari-controller is an awesome addition.
