Has Anyone Polished Their Wheels Or Forks??

Once in a while I clean them with bug and tar remover.

Polish ?? I don't have chrome...chrome don't get you home.

 
Was talking with an owner of a pretty new Busa with chrome wheels the other night. The bike was silver and gray metallic, and the whole look was absolutely gorgeous. He got them for $400 and his old wheels. Sure got me to thinking. And I do mean gorgeous ;)

I went with the 03 specifically because of the black rims. After 10 years of Gold Wings the last thing I want to do is polish SHtuph! ;)

 
You can probably exchange your stock wheels for polish ones with these wheel polishing companies.

I know back when I owned my automotive store that we used to exchange stock wheels for chrome ones.

If you like them chrome, that's not that hard to get done, just look around for a wheel shop that does polishing or chroming.

 
No, I just ride, ride, ride, wash some, ride, ride, ride, wash some. I like the bike to look descent, but when I'm riding don;t really care. Just want it to run good.

 
I did my wheels, swing arm.drive shaft.head covers and final drive on my royal star in black,i loved the out come gave it sort of that old school bike and stock car feel.i think the european blue version of the fjr has the black wheels kinda like it mabey with black forks and pipes....FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WHEN WILL IT END ! O well nobody ever ended up in jail after a nite of tricking out there bike......happy fjr'n

 
No. I sold the Harley and don't need chrome. And by the way the way I HATE the word "bling". Word to yo motha'. Reminds me of all of those shows on TV that do nothing for the performance but add all sorts of non-functional chrome, electronics and such to make a slow car slower. Or possibly bikes with large chromed wrenches on the front down tubes. Or rigid framed bikes and a 150 cubic inch paint shaker of a motor mounted rigidly in the frame. Or any other unrideable piece of over-chromed poseur crap-bike out there. Whew! I am glad I got that off my chest, I feel a little better.

 
My sportie buddy had the wheels of his Z1000 annodized blue and the bike is painted black. It looks WAY cool. Personally, I don't want to clean and polish any more than I have to. Mine will stay stock. Powdercoated if something HAS to be done, although I wonder how the edges of that would hold up to tire changes.

 
I bought a set of used wheels. I plan on having them chrome plated. I will see how they look on my ultra fast 04 silver model. A paint job my be in my future, will have to see... ;) I will post pic's when I get them back from the chrome guy..

 
Yes! I did it! The whole job start to finish took about 3 hours and the result is very nice. If I knew how to post pictures, I'd show you what they look like.

I bought a quart can of aircraft paint remover from the local automotive paint and body supply store along with a roll of blue masking tape. I masked the rim off at the point where the machined surface meets the cast surface. I then used a paint brush to lay down a coat of the paint remover (this is all done with the wheels on the bike). The paint remover has a rather thick consistancy so that it doesn't run and drip (you must use common sence as to how thick to apply this stuff because it will remove the paint on anything it touches, you don't want to be slopping it around). I coated half of the circumference of both sides of the wheel. In about ten minutes the paint begins to bubble up. When a significant amount of paint has lifted, I used a rag to remove as much of the gunk as possible and then followed that up with some steel wool. The little bit of paint that remained was coated again and the process repeated until all paint was gone. I then did the other half of the wheel.

To buff the wheels I used a buffing wheel (available at any hardware store) on the end of my drill, and a stick of red jewelers rouge. The friction of the turning buffing wheel against the rim will cause the wheel to turn. This is a good thing because the rim advances itself. After that I applied my favorite metal/alloy polish to finish the job. The rear wheel is the easiest to shine because with the bike on the center stand you just fire it up, put it in second gear and hold your the polish soaked rag against the wheel. The front wheel has to be lifted with a jack under the front of the bike so that it will turn for you as you apply the rouge and later the polish. The initial result is very good, however, the more you polish the rims over time, the more brilliant the finish will become.

And that is about it. If I can figure out how to post a picture you'll see the results. It is worth the effort!

I stripped the black paint off the wheels on my '03. With only one session of machine polishing,

I find it easy to keep the alloy looking good with Mother's polish from time to time. I use Turtle wash, which leaves a wax film on the bike, including the wheels, which helps maintain the clean alloy look that I prefer. I do not need a high polish, just a clean alloy look.

The 03 FJR displayed on the Cox Racing Group site has chromed or polished wheels.

Looks sweet, but high maintenance. I guy I met with a Busa paid ~$1k to have his wheels chromed. ouch!
