I always stay seated on my bike when I fill it. Same as putting it on the centerstand without the hassle of getting off.
You must go through a lot of DEPENDS.....

Speaking of which--to hijack the thread slightly: If you're at a station, and they aren't busy (lots of open pumps), is it bad form to leave your bike at the pump while you take a piss and clean your helmet? I do it all the time, but with some riders from the big city i've been with, i take it this is verboten in some places.....

. I try to remember my manners and to play pretty with others. If the place is busy then I move the bike. If there are lots of open pumps as you say then I take my sweet time and don't worry about it. Besides, I've had lots of nice chats with nice folks when lounging around the pumps. I've even used the space in between pumps when a serious downpour is going on and no other quick shelter is available. From Maine to Florida I've never had anyone complain.

I've done the opposite...... when you have to pay inside (and they don't require pay in advance), I attempted to pull away so the next vehicle can fill up, park, go inside and pay...... cashier chewed me out because he can't clear the pump while payment is still pending...... meanwhile next customer is out there wondering why the pump won't work, making funny gestures and pushing the help button........
