I first met Beeroux at White Stag in January, 2008. I told him that I had been going to Big Bear for 20 years, but had never been to one of his bonus locations for the Spank 2006 5-day rally, which was the Hot Spot:

This was the bonus:

Big Bear Lake, CA

The Hot Spot 1,249 points 1000 to 000 daily

Take a good look at the walls in this local favorite watering hole. See all the double circles painted on the wall? Take a picture of any one of these strange objects. Be sure to ask someone how they were made.

41011 Big Bear Blvd. Approx 4.5 miles east of the dam on Hwy 18, on the right.

and here is what you had to photograph:

(Thanks to H. Mark Lewis for the ****ie painting picture.)

GZ laughed and said that was the job of a Rally Master-to show people stuff they had never seen in their own backyards.

So this weekend I invited GZ to visit the Hot Spot for lunch with me. Well, it turns out that the Spot is closed, maybe temporarily or maybe forever, and GZ was spending the weekend in LA County anyway.

I moved to LA from North San Diego County about a year ago. I really miss SD, but am doing my best to find good places in LA. What could I propose as an alternative destination for lunch????

Many of my friends participated in the 5-day and 7-day Spank 2008, and rode upwards of 2,000 miles to Atlanta, Georgia just to have a Ghetto Burger at Ann's Snack Shack.

Miss Ann's Rules-I heard that some of you broke these rules and experienced the wrath of Miss Ann, so as a refresher, in case you ever go to visit her again:

Now I had just found a place in Watts, California that I was willing to put up against Ann's, so I invited Beeroux to lunch at:

Hawkins House of Burgers

11603 Slater Street

Los Angeles, CA 90059

(323) 563-1129

Beeroux accepted the invitation, and fortunately was able to bring along his girlfriend. I do not know her handle, so I will call her Sheroux for this report.

We ordered two Hawkins Burgers, and here is what we got:

Here is what the damage looked like after Beeroux and Sheroux finished:

Beeroux pronounced it different, but as good as Ann's Ghetto Burger. GZ still had not had enough, so he sweet talked the cook into giving him a complementary Fried Chicken Sampler plate. Sorry, no pics.

And after that, we completed the combo bonus of life by heading over to see the famous folk art masterpiece the Watts Towers, which were conveniently just a couple of miles away. Sheroux had heard of them, but had never seen them, and it was great for me to see them again.

FJR content: Beeroux also got to take the Darkside FJR for a spin. Here is a pic of Beeroux returning from his Darkside test ride:

What in heck were you eating there? It looks like some Los Robustos meal that hadn't been scraped up off the road yet!! Don't ya know you're not supposed to eat roadkill uncooked, it could give you brain-worms!

Nice pics! That burger looks pretty gruesome though. Was it any good?

Hey George, Sheroux is pretty cute. Good job! Bring her to Pinks so we can harass her.

Looks like a lot of fat and calories Doug, George needs to lose some poundage and yep his significant other is very pretty, much too pretty for GZ. Like Jerry asked, was the burger tasty?? Been to Annie's in Atlanta on Spank 5 day whenever that was held. Good fries and she is lots of fun.

ATTGATT eh, GZ? Fond memories of the **** wall in Big Bear from Spank 06. Watts Towers of Simon Rodia were a bonus in the 2007 IBR, IIRC. Another one I did not get. I made the pilgrimage to the towers the first time I went to LA. That and Randy's Donuts were highlights. I was young then.

I would like to know which rules were broken at Miss Ann's?

Damn Georgie, she is WAY too cute. Whatever drugs you're slipping her are working, just make sure you keep the dosage right. Good for you!

My favorite is from Chris Ogden's report:

https://www.ironbutt.org/forum/forum_posts....D=2395&PN=2

"After 6 hours sleep, I made it over to Ann's about noon- just in time to watch rally participant Hal Risser wolf down his "Ghetto" Burger. Ann's Snack Shop in Atlanta is an unusual place. It's small- only about eight counter seats- though there's a big, screened-in area where you wait until a seat opens up. The rules are you can only eat, or order for that matter, if a seat at the counter opens up AND it's your turn, even if you want to do take-out! So if a single seat opens up, but you are not next in line, you cannot take it- it stays empty until someone else leaves. Makes no sense whatsoever, but those are Ann's Rules. Moreover, you do not mess with Ann, she'll give you what-for. Ann is a feisty black lady of indeterminate age, and she does things her way. Trouble is, these rules aren't posted anywhere, so everyone just walks in (unless they've been there before) and gets yelled at by Ann and told to wait outside. It's actually pretty funny. I of course walked right in, and Hal says she yelled at me, but I didn't even notice!

I went back out and inquired as to the protocol, and was filled in by the waiting diners. So I waited my turn and was fortunate to get a seat in only about 30 minutes. Then, of course, it probably took at least an hour to get the burger and eat (half) of it.

While I'm waiting, rallyist Ken Meese also shows up! He walks in and is yelled at too! I explain the "rules" to him and he goes outside to wait."

Thanks Turbo Dave, I meant to include the Spank 2 2008 5-day Rally as well. I went and corrected the original post.

The pictures of the Hawkins Burger do not do it justice. It is excellent. If you are afraid of calories, you should probably stay home and have a salad w/ no dressing. Maybe it is a good place if you are on the Atkins Diet. I highly recommend it the next time you are in Watts.

Here are guesses as to what it has:

"They are famous for their massive Hawkins Burger. A multi layer burger filled with two fried eggs, bacon, chili cheese, pastrami, four 8 oz burger patties, spicy sausage, and all the fixings."

"For those not in the know, the Hawkins Special consists of three 1-lb. hamburger patties, each covered with cheese, and separated by interstitial buns. Accompanying the bottom patty are bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, and chili. The middle section includes fried eggs, pastrami, and mustard. The top portion brings a butterflied hot link, pickles, and mayo. All told, the beast stands ~10" high and probably weighs nigh on 5 lbs. The cost is $15.99, and includes a bag of french fries and a soda. I got Diet Coke because it's important to be diet-conscious."

Good Memory, Maura.

I am glad to know you made it a priority to see the Watts Towers when you were in LA. They really are a national treasure.

I've never been there. It might be a good destination during Bite The Weenie. Let's go down to Watts at around 10 PM on a Saturday Night to check out the towers. Who's with me? (cuz I sure as **** ain't going alone!)

holy clogged artery batman. Damn that burger is awesome. Hmmmmm,

So Doug, how about posting a best burgers of SoCA map (including waypoints) and perhaps I'll make my Pinks2009 run an extended one that includes a loop of those hamburger joints. Hmmmm, I could leave reno on an awful-awful, hit the Squeeze-Inn in Sacto, then Hamburger Mary's in San Francisco ..........

.....anyway, the picture of that burger is unbelievable, but then again, so is George having a girlfriend. :) Uhh, wonder if he took her to that bonus (near rally headquarters) of the 2007Spank Rally -the residence where he lost his V at the age of 26. :)

Hamburger Mary's? Is that place still open? I don't know that we have any really good burgers here in Gay Bay. At least, outstanding on par with Ann's in Atlanta.

For great diner atmosphere I'd recommend Val's in Hayward. Damn...that could be an RTE destination.

Jerry I"m not sure. Lots of good eats when I lived/worked in gaytown -before finding my heterosexuality and moving to Reno, ........but I can't recall of a good burger joint. A couple places on the Haight, "Art's" down in the avenues .....but no truly awesome burger comes to mind.

I'll have to check out Val's and spare the trip over the bay.

Been to Annie's in Atlanta on Spank 5 day whenever that was held. Good fries and she is lots of fun.
Just to add to the above info, I got there in the early morning around 0200 after cruising down from Memphis. Let me tell you I will never enter that area alone again. Dayligh  t passage is ok but n  ot after dark..

So Turbo I take it that means you will join us at Watts Towers the night of the Weenie RTE? After all, when two or more are gathered in LDRiding's name...

Holly Crap...more than a kilo of meat, covered in cheese and more processed meat... I've got the meat sweats just thinking about it...
