After I replaced my oil pan and had everything but the plastic back together I let the bike run until all the oil burned off the exhaust. While it was running I noticed the two middle header pipes were glowing a very faint red but the outside two were not.

Is this normal?

Yep! Ya need to put the pancakes on the inside an bacon on the outside, bein' the bacon don't need as much of the heat to cook...

'S'all right.. I'm here to help.

:jester:

Not quite that hot but close. Is that normal during idle? And just have two of the for to do it? I understand that happening under power. How do aluminum exhaust valves take that kind of heat?

What makes you think the valves are aluminum? Just because the head is...doesn't mean the valves are. IIRC, the valves are a hardened steel alloy and there are hardened steel valve seats pressed into the head.

Typical EGT is 1250 and 1600 with the O2 sensor being damaged around 1650. Steel melts way over 2000. And IIRC these high temperatures aren't in the head, but designed to take place in the exhaust past the valve.

As a PCIII user.....then I'd be concerned because you need to have a working knowledgeable of these different variables of intake, combustion, exhaust, temperature, mixtures, etc.

I've never noticed anyone's pipes glowing. I would have to guess unless under heavy strain (Hi-performance motors) they shouldn't be glowing.

Another indicator besides what Ig mentioned with ox issues that will make it run hot is, a burnt valve. Watch old funny car shots with a lost exhaust valve. It has a constant flame and glows orange hot.

Newer pipes and materials may lend itself to glow. The newer ceramic coated auto headers are made to take the heat better, not sure if it is more prone to glow. The FeeJ exhaust header I believe is Stainless. Maybe it heats orange hot more quickerer.

FYI - Aluminum vlaves would just melt away.

Maybe it just does it. Your bike is special.

Called the local shop and they told me its a leak. I did not replace the header gaskets and that is whats causing the glow.

Thanks for everyones input. Now we all know.

You didn't mention no new exhaust gaskets. Naughty boy. That's like, well not quite, but like pulling the head without a new head gasket. Always replace the gasket. Glad you know. ;)
