I know Crater Lake is popular as a ride destination. I caged 138 from Roseburg to 97 today with the wife, Issues from the Susan Creek area to Steamboat. Gravel and limbs/leaves on the road. I saw a helicopter with water bucket, half-a-dozen water trucks and a command post just north of Glide. Traffic is going through but you are not allowed to stop -- traffic cones are set up to block waysides.

I saw smoldering/smokey brush a few yards off the road some 300 yards south of Steamboat Inn, and smelled smoke the whole time. Multiple charred logs/trees by the roadside that had been cut down.

Caution advised. I saw an '05, '06, '07, and '08 FJR at Crater Lake today as well as many bikes. I love the twisties on this road and ride it fairly fast, but I advise the speed limit in the area described and stay well in the middle of the lane.

YMMV

Wish one of the FJRs at Crater Lake would've been mine, but I was doing more, uh, interesting things... For instance, I learned that the penalty for 100 mph in the state of Oregon is $1103 plus 30-90 days license suspension. Yes, I was in traffic school...

Ouch! Did the 'folks' impound the bike too or were you allowed to ride it home?

That hurts! And I fear it. Were you really going high over 100, or a couple over and the LEO wouldn't cut you a break? Time for a radar detector.... I can't imagine the insurance hit either. Sorry bro.

We were up there Friday. We were going to take 138 in, but because of the fires we had to go further south and come in on the back side. It was a nice ride, but kind of cold and on the way down from the crater the fog was so bad that we could barely see 20 feet in front of us. Definitely had to take it slow there.

I took 227 back to Roseburg from 62 (South exit of Crater Lake exits onto 62), which brought me out at Canyonville. Nice ride. Got to see the Rogue River Gorge that route too. There was a Helicopter base for the fires on 227 but clear. Warm and sunny for me.

One of my favorite loops is Roseburg exiting by Rte. 99, to North Bank Road picked up at Wilbur, then at the end go East on 138 to Colliding Rivers/Glide, on to the Diamond Lake Loop, then Crater Lake Rim Road, out the South exit to 62, stop for the Rogue River Gorge just south of Crater Lake, then continue south, pick up 227 West for 50 twisty miles and exit in Canyonville. Stop at 7feathers Casino for a free coke (as I play a hand of cards), then come on home to Roseburg. About 500 miles and a very nice day.
