(I've read through the Bin-0-Facts, several times)

Ok -they have just pulled the paddles of my chest from the cardiac arrest I exuded at the local Yamaha shop this morning. it's time for the break in oil change on my '14 FJR. I decided to go with the Yamaha oil filter since I was there to pick up the rear-end oil anyway.

(Yamaha Parts Dude) "That will be $54.51

(Pants) "What did you just say?"

(YPD) "$54.51"

(Pants) "How many filters and quarts of oil did you sell me?"

(YPD) "Just one of each. Is that how many you want?"

Everything went black after that. When I came to, I found out I paid $30.08 for the oil, and $19.93 for the filter.

(Be still my beating heart. Breathe Pants......)

So I'm resolved to use the OEM gear oil. The bottle does not have an API, SAE, or other rating on it, and the owner's manual does not specify same. Rather, they say use the oil ".... exclusive to FJR1300 and V-Max....." oil. I'm sure it's BUSH, but for 5 changes worth over 40,000 miles, I'll let it go.

But the oil filter is another story. I have scruples.

First, FYI the Yamaha part number has been superceded. The correct part number now is 5GH-13440-50-00.

Second, I did some oil filter manufacturer searching and discovered the following:

Fram - cross references PH6017A, however that filter does not look physically the same as the OEM (the fram is taller)

Bosch - no cross reference given. The 3300 appears to cross reference with the Fram PH6017A, and is the same size.

Pure-o-later - no cross reference given

Wix - cross references 51358, but I haven't seen one yet

EMGO - cross references 10-82240 but I haven't seen one yet

K&N - cross references KN-204 but I haven't seen one yet

I checked online and can buy Yamaha filters in bulk (4-6) for about $10.00 a piece. I suppose that is better than local, but any input on this would be appreciated.

Bet my Gen I would have taken a roll of toilet paper!!!!!

1 Gallon Rotella T 15W40 ..... $13

1 Filter .... $5 (ish)

1 Quart 80/90 Gear Oil ..... $5 (ish) (this will do 10 changes)

Walmart ... sneak it in with the weekly groceries and you have a free service :D

List price on the OEM filter is $12.99. Your dealer screwed you.

$30 a gallon is not that bad for motorcycle specific oil. I generally use Mobil 1 15W50

$25 for 5 quart bottle from Wally world.

Federated LF240 is a reasonably priced filter, made by Hastings, which is amongst the best out there and a small step above the Federated grade.... part number for the better Hastings filter LF240.

I have been using them for 10 years on my 05, and is the same as the 15....

Funny that its the same filter for my car - honda accord..., my grasshopper and my bike, I just buy cases of them.....

Did you ever open up one of these things?

Kind of makes me wonder just how fine a particle it is rated to filter out - 20 micron, 5 micron, 2 micron?

Perhaps it's like a K&N air filter - the dirtier it gets, the smaller the the particle it catches.

YMMV

Um...

I believe that's $30.08 for a quart of that Yamaha FJR specific Whale Jiz gear oil for your rear end.

Yamaha sure is proud of their service lube.

I am assuming this was at a different dealership than the one where you bought the bike.

Hopefully your new riding buddy will chime in with some actual prices from Friendly Yamaha. He should be useful for something.

I don't remember what I pay for the Yamaha filter but I know it is less than $19.93. Since I get to visit with my favorite motorcycle salesman and have a look around at the new bikes I don't mind paying a bit more than I would at Wal-Mart.

why do the stealerships try to screw everyone ??? I guess they are linking with the Harley ***** who think ALL of their customers are stupid and rich.

Take RFH with you next time Pants.

What I don't understand is - as far as oil and filters are concerned, why are you treating your Gen 3 any different from your Gen 1?

Fram DG7317 less than $4.00 if I recall. Mobil Delvac 10W-40 for diesel trucks. $13.00 in change for 4 quarts. Oil change done for less than the filter you bought OEM.

Wal-mart, As much as I hate to go there I do on a limited basis.

Thanks for all of the replies, both useful and otherwise.

I'm not opposed to purchasing any aftermarket oil filter or oil, but only if I can definitively cross reference it with the manufacturer's OEM material.

In the case of the gear oil, Yamaha does NOT offer a API or similar rating for the gear oil. They ONLY say use the "whale giz". At 0.21 quarts per change, 8,000 miles per change (all per the owner's manual), that gives me 5 changes over the life cycle of the $30.00 quart of whale giz. I don't like it, but in the absence of a manufacturer approved substitute, I'll pay it.

In the case of the motor oil, Yamaha does offer an approved specification, and for my climate, Rotella 15W40 meets or exceeds it, so I'm all for $13.00 a gallon. No harm, no foul.

In the case of the oil filter, as the OP states, many of the filter manufacturers do NOT offer a cross reference for the 2014 or 2015 FJR. Some show the 2013. I know its supposed to be the same, but when my bike starves for oil, I can't go to Yamaha and say "the forum guys said it was OK". The fram 7317 is NOT the filter for my bike. Fram says it's the 6017A is the correct filter, but when I put them side by side with the Yamaha filter, it does NOT look the same. Maybe it is the same inside, but I'm not taking any chances. Same with the Bosch. And a few others.

I'll grant you that $20.00 was a screwing for the filter. MSRP at $13.00 seems a little more reasonable. It's 70 miles to Friendly Yamaha (each way). I figured my local Yamaha place could at least sell me the parts at MSRP (not 50% above msrp). BTW - Friendly Yamaha's price for the rear end oil is $22.00.

I don't mind paying for my anal tendencies. But what happened today was gouging and unreasonable.

Yamaha Whale **** is, I believe, specified GL-5

Yamaha have to provide this info if you ask, or they have to give it away free ... Their choice.

Hey pants! Yamaha changed the oem oil filter on the '14 to the shorter 2.5" units from the longer 3.5" filters. The part that matters - the threads and surface that comes in contact with the mounting location are identical. As in the past, either size works and satisfies the warranty service requirements.

So many thoughts about the gear oil...all boil down to this: is a GL-5 oil sufficient as it was for all prior years or is there a secret ingredient in the Yamaha brand? If the cost of the Yamaha item, when spread over the number of changes you get from one jug, seems reasonable, buy the Yamaha. If all other bikes, including prior year FJRs operated just fine with aftermarket gear oil that is cheaper buy that instead.
