Officer Randy Simmons was shot and killed as he and other members of the Los Angeles SWAT Team made entry into a home at approximately 12:30 am. The team had been deployed to the home after a suspect inside called 911 and claimed to have murdered three family members.

As the team entered, the suspect opened fire, striking Officer Simmons and a second officer. Both officers were immediately transported to Northridge Medical Center, where Officer Simmons succumbed to his wounds approximately 30 minutes later.

The suspect was later shot and killed by another member of the SWAT team as the standoff continued.

Officer Simmons had served with the Los Angeles Police Department for 27 years. He is survived by his wife, two children, parents, and two sisters.

Shame on you other LEO's who jump on the band wagon. You have heard only one side of the story. I refuse to pass judgement without having personal knowledge. I certainly hope none of you are ever in the position where you are 'monday morning quarterbacked".

Apart from the last 3 lines, relevance...?

The LEO had a reason for doing what he did - boredom may not be a good reason, nor the reason he told the officer to stop the lights, but it is a reason. Obviously we won't hear his side of the story, which is unfortunate. Does it really matter though? If you look at what they were both doing, they were both doing their jobs. Both officers are there to ensure that people are reminded that the school zones require people to slow down. Their methods are different (IMO flashing lights definitely wins), but the outcome is the same.

My wife works at a local school. They have an on-campus school district officer for a good part of the day.
The school is located on a busy street that normally has a 40mph speed limit, but has signs posted for 25mph "When Children are Present".

The officer began parking his patrol car out on the street during the time when students were being dropped off and picked up before and after school, with the emergency lights going, to remind people of the need to slow down during those periods.

It wasn't long before he was contacted by a motor officer and told not to do that, as it cut down on his action. Seems he would rather hide in the bushes and let people speed through school zones so he could give them citations than actually have all the traffic slow down during the times when kids are near the street.

Yeah, it's all about the safety....
Have none of you LEO's actually read the post? In this case, the SCHOOL DISTRICT officer has no powers outside of the schoool grounds. Yes he is sworn, but according to the Clovis Unified School District: The CUSD Police Services department, comprised of sworn officers, is responsible for the personal safety of students, employees and the many guests who visit the schools or attend any of the events the District sponsors.

He has no authority to enforce any traffic law. You are also assuming that the motor officer actually made that comment. Could it be that the motor was working with Undercover Officers who were expecting a drug courrier to drive by and the motor was going to make and enforcement stop? Or possibly Clovis PD was involved in some other operation and the actions of school district officer was infringing on that operation?

Oh, the reason for the death notification? Every time someone bashes a COP, I gently remind them how courageous LEO's put their lives on the line everyday doing things most of these forum members would ever do. I challenge anyone to say they would trade places with Officer Simmons.

I was not COP bashing and do not endorse anyone doing that...I respect the servcie they provide and the risks they take for us at a moments notice.

I was responding to a specific situation as presented by a forum member.

Interesting... I cop praised, 1 cop criticised. Since you choose to take the negative side, are you a "glass half empty" guy, or are you telling us that, in your opinion, the school cop isn't "equal" to the motor cop???

At any rate, I haven't heard anyone on this thread "bashing" cops. There has, however, been some criticism of the actions of an individual.

You insult me and any anyone else who responded here with your misplaced insinuations.

Take a Lude, get your BP checked, get off the caffeine, and put on some reading glasses and actually read what was posted you moron. :glare:

Perhaps the motor cop was misunderstood by the school cop. He might have been joking about being able to write less tickets.

Then the school cop tells the story to the girls in the school office to make himself look good.

I will give both officers credit for doing a job I don't want to do.

Just like those crazy firefighters , when they see a burning building they run inside,

+1

That could have been the way it went down...

I'm confused, am I the cop that did the bashing?

How would any of us know this? It wasn't in any of the posts above your big red font response. In my jurisdiction, school police is a division of the city police, thus, they have the same authority as any other officer.

All I said was the motor cop should be talked to. And he should be based on the information provided. Who gives a rats ass if he has no authority to stop someone off the grounds, he wasn't trying to exercise his authority by stopping people, he was slowing people down for the safety of the students. However, I will also mention, that in the post directly above your big red font reply, I too gave mitigating circumstances to which having him shut his lights off was a sound, non revenue generating idea.

You are also assuming that the motor officer actually made that comment.
We are not assuming anything. This is the information that was provided. Just because it was presented by a firefighter doesn't make it less credible. (just kidding Toe) :)
