'04 with Yamaha grips, 153K installed new.. No heat. Power OK at red wire. Checked resistance for each grip seperately.Right grip was 2.2. Left grip zero but got a reading when trying to twist the grip (It did have some movement). This it "appears" all I need is a left grip. Obviously that's not for sale. Looking for suggestions for an "economical" fix. Would like to be able to just replace the grips iwth an aftermarket set that would be compatible with the existing wiring and controller.

Any thoughts/suggestions much appreciated !

I may be wrong but you should be able to splice any heated grip set up into the existing wiring. It's all 12V stuff right? I run Hot Grips brand where you can replace only one grip but the whole kit runs over $100 (even more if you want their controller).

The Yamaha grips are wired in series so you would be looking for a low ohm grip. Because the left grip mounts on the metal handlebar you would like the grip to have ribs on the inside to minimize the heat sink effect. You can buy Gen II grips separately, I think they are only $200-$300 EACH

After having a bunch of different grip kits and heat tapes on my FJR I am very happy with the Oxford kit I put on a few months ago. It gets hotter, faster than the OEM kit. There are a couple of different Oxford grip types for the FJR so it's worth checking it out. I put the Oxford heat controller on the OEM mounting plate. The two 'not preferred' things about the Oxford kit are the tiny LEDs that indicate heat setting which are too small and faint making them invisible in bright light and the controller works in steps, where I find 3/4 too hot and 1//2 too cool. I added V-Strom hand guards and Oxfords at the same time and it is wonderful up here in the Yankee Freezer. I have ridden to work several times now with ambient in the 15º-20ºF range and have found 100% power to be too hot.

If you can give me a day or two I can look around, I'm pretty sure I have a good left OEM grip someplace. What I'm not sure of is if I have changed the bullet connectors to something else, I have been known to fiddle with electrical stuff. If you can wait and are interested send me a PM.
