True true true. And yes, we have gotten way off track here. I wasn't disputing dealer profits. There is money in moving motor vehicles. Seen many a millionaire made moving cars. If MikeYork5 has 12 dealerships accross the country, I would bet he's one of them.

If Dodge could knock off 8k on your truck and it didn't cost the dealer a thing, then how much money IS markup? What did it actually cost to build that or any vehicle?

Now, I am not suggesting that we should pay what it costs, I know why they need that money. R&D, design of new crap, etc, etc. Which, strangely enough, goes back to the original (geez, I think) intent of this post. If Harley-Davidson doesn't sell BIKES, the company will be in trouble. Maybe not tomorrow, but it will happen. Heck, GM is in trouble. Didn't happen over night. Harley will not be insulated because of 'related' sales. It will take the sales of BIKES for them to stay in the game.

Alright, Sparkenstein, I am going to shut up now. We have talked this thing around so much I am lost in the fodder.

I need a beer.

C'mon, I'm buyin'

Can we all get together and sit in a circle and jerk? :D

Just don't see it happening anytime soon if even in my lifetime.

It is like saying if the profits of oil started to decline that they were in trouble.

Harley has made such huge profits with the recent chopper craze that they had a boom and it might be falling back to previous numbers but I am not convinced that the manu is in any danger.

“We’re definitely not getting above MSRP, but we're also not way below."

“The number of bikes available has really allowed the customer to shop around for the cheapest deal.”

The statements from the first page tell me they just aren't selling a msrp $16000 bike for $19000 like they use to.

They are still not hurting so lets continue the circle

Lido Iacocca said it best, "It's not what you sell it for -- it's what it costs to build it." Or, as others have said, "....our head-long race to the bottom."
