Hello All. what do you guys/gals think a 2004 ABS with 9000 miles is worth?

In a recession, in the winter, by owner (dealers 'start' higher) w/ little or no Farkles...

'03 = $3k+ '04 = $4k+ '05 = $5k+ '06 = $6k+ .....etc.

Extra value for low miles, farkles, etc. but not a ton more. JMHO

It's been sitting a lot. All fluids are suspect, fork seals may be dried out. Recall for TPS may not have been done. ABS block piston may be rusted in place. Brake caliper pistons may have a ring of rust around them too.

At minimum, I would factor in a full oil change w/filter, diff fluid change, brake fluid service to include flushing of all of the lines and fork oil change/flush. Greasing the shaft splines with some Honda Moly 50, a fresh set of plugs and air filter check or replace and a thorough going over. Not to mention a set of tires. Unless they just put a new set on, the ones on there are going to be either worn out or hard as sin. I would want to take it out and activate the ABS to ensure it's functional. W/o doing that, even though the light is off, you won't know if it works. Find some gravel and do a low speed brake check with each end alone to verify. You'll feel it pulsing in the lever and pedal. Remember that the '04/5 bikes do not have linked brakes.

$5-7k will find you a bunch of '04-05 ABS bikes with <30k. In some ways, I'd rather have a 30k bike than a 9k one. I would be reluctant to offer more than $6k on this unless the owner can show some maintenance records to indicate the fluids have been changed every couple of years or you really have a good vibe for what they are telling you has been done in the way of preventative maintenance.

Edit - Are you thinking about buying another bike and this is your FJR you are talking about?

You should buy it.. Then yer 04 would have less miles than mine and I would gain some respect here!! :yahoo:
Finally, a reason to respect bustnut.

I'm really confused with this thread. A 2004 (with ABS no less) with only 9K ....is certainly worth more than any gen2bike. Faster, lighter and less problematic. Anything you pay less than what a new GEN2 is going for is a deal IMO.

A 2004 (best year) with only 9K is quite a deal, it won't last long at any price. If I was ready for my 3rd 2004, I'd be all over that bike.

Look who woke up :) . Good to see you are paying attention although I think it will take a bit more to respect Bust :p

Hey, who the **** are you and where the hell did you come from?

And how did you get so smart?

As for the OP, need more info on condition, farkles, and maintenance history before I would venture a guess on the value.

..

thanks to all for their replies. it's is a friend's bike that he keeps out of state. it is true that it hasn't been ridden much and sitting around isn't great.

i actually already have 2 FJR 1300's and this would be my third. Neither of them is nearby, one is in Phoenix and the other is in Italy. If i buy another, it will live in Ft. Lauderdale. i thought about buying a Kawasaki Concours but i love my FJR's.

When people talk about a bike that has been left "sitting around" having problems, a lot will depend on where it has been stored and in what condition. If the bike was sitting in a non-climate controlled space in, say... Ft. Lauderdale Fla, then a lot of extra problems might happen due to the high humidity. If it was stored in a dry, dark, cool garage in Arizona the age may be a non-issue.

I'd do all of the maintenance things recommended by OCfjr on any bike that I bought used, regardless of the maintenance or storage history. It's just starting with a clean maintenance slate. The engine doesn't wear from sitting. Since that is the main thing that will result in "End Of Life" of these bikes, it does mean that having ultra low mileage does add some value.

But it isn't like a 2012 w/ the same miles. There is a depreciation for age regardless of the mileage. If you can get it for a good price, then go for it. And be careful about storing it long term in FL. Just ask Howie about the ravages of airborne moisture.

I can help you out here. I'm a pretty good wrench, and not only could I keep your FJRs tuned and ready, I could see that they don't suffer from problems caused by sitting around. I'm currently free and ready to travel. I can start next Monday. Let me know which FJR needs attention first so I can pack my tools while waiting for the plane ticket.

I guess that 'what a 2004 FJR is worth" in part depends on just how good a friend the current owner really is.

Cool! You can never have too many FJRS!!! And you have two that are in some good places - especially Italy! Woo-hoo! Where in Italy? I had one glorious day of riding in Italy from Milan up in to Switzerland and I can't wait to get back.

How often do you get to Phoenix? Next time you are in town you need to give us Zonies a ring for a ride.

I wouldn't worry about the bike sitting too much. Yes, there can be some issues, but there can also be issues on bikes with more miles depending on how their owners took care of them. How much does your friend want for the low mile 04? I got a pretty damned good deal, but last March I picked up my 04 FJR w/abs with 4344 miles and just a few minor farkles for $5800. I had been looking for a long time.

Hey SkooterG

i bought the Europe FJR in Paris and kept it there a few years. Chased Lance Armstrong and the Tour de France around a bit. The bike is now in Milano. Have ridden to Monaco for F1, Venice, Florence, Rome, Amalfi Coast etc.. We are trying to figure out if we can ride back to Paris this spring or anther trip to Monaco in May for F1.

The "west coast" FJR has lived mostly near LA (coastal trips to Napa and Vegas) although i did ride 700 miles south from LA into San Ignacio Baja. In June we rode it to Scottsdale, met up with some friends who flew in and rode to Sedona, Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, Page, Monument Valley, back to Sedona Enchantment for Lambo Giro and the bike is now stored near the airport. Labor day we flew back and rode to Bryce Canyon and spent a day boating on Lake Powell. friggin HOT! both months near Phoenix.

Don't know when we will be back. We are warm weather people and January in AZ is not as warm as Florida, thus the FL bike. We will be back in AZ possibly in the spring. The roads, weather and scenery are GREAT in AZ !
