Jeff,

I'm still planning on making the trip. As it turns out having Friday off works out a lot better for me. Some ******* decided to schedule meetings for me on Mondays. Anyway looking forward to the trip.

Bill

I can vouch for the Bridge Street Inn, I've stayed there the third weekend in September for the last 5 or 6 years. Its cheap, close to food, and decent enough for me. Usually no reservations are required, but...
The third weekend in September is an annual sabmag ride hosted by a couple of maggots in Baker City and they have sold off everything to spend all of next year on the road. Last year we had 3 or four FJR riders all V4 lovers that could not stomach the ST13. This year could be the end of an era.

In previous years we've ridden Hells Canyon and surrounding roads. This year we're undecided but probably be riding some local roads like Dooley Mtn. and others to the west of Baker City. We BBQ in Baker City Saturday night.

Doug,

Can we participate in the BBQ? Well will pay.

I was actually thinking the same thing myself so I am checking. Will post here when I know.

Most likely you'll need to supply meat and drink of your choice and should be good. There is a great Safeway in town and I've bought steaks there before.

The couple that host this event sold their house earlier this year and are now living in a couple rooms of a very large shop until they leave on their epic adventure. The shop is on the north/east side of I-84 although I have not been there yet.

I exchanged emails with the Baker City hosts of the SabMag ride the same weekend. All are welcome at the BBQ Saturday night. To be safe plan on supplying your own meat and libation. Here is Penny Devlins reply:

The more the merrier!

Tell them to avoid the bears. We've seen two up there so far this year.

In case they need to call for directions or times or anything, my cell

# is 541-377-0792 and Jim's is 541-377-7998.

Our physical address is: 43251 Lindley Rd., Baker City, OR. Lindley

runs parallel to the freeway, and is close to the airport - just in

case you needed to know that very important info.

See ya next weekend.

Well, it's almost that time of year again. Where does the time go?

The 8th Annual Eastern Oregon ride is Sept. 15-16-17. We'll meet up

Friday night, the 15th, ride and BBQ on Saturday, then play it by ear

Sunday. We have moved and don't have any extra bedrooms, but we have

floor space and tent space, and room to park the bikes in the barn.

This might be the last Eastern Oregon ride unless someone else takes

it over next year, or we end up back here after our year off.

We don't have a route pinned down yet due to all the forest fires, but

we're working on it.

If you need more info, email me at [email protected]

Hope to see you here!!

Subject: [Devlins Travels] Ride Map for Eastern Oregon 2006 Ride

We've already ridden these roads at different times, but we're running out of unique combinations.

Saturday morning, Sept. 16, we'll meet at the Bridge St. Inn for breakfast at 8:00. We'll plan to leave at 9. From there, we'll head up Hiway 7 to Hiway 245 - Dooley Mtn. -

stop at the Unity Reservoir for a break.

From the Reservoir we'll head to Ukiah. If anyone needs fuel (it'll be 135 miles to Ukiah from Baker City) they'll need to fuel up at Austin Junction. At Austin Junction we turn onto Hiway 7, go about 1 mile, and turn left onto the Middle Fork Road. At Hiway 395 turn right, go about 30 miles, turn right to go to Ukiah.

Fuel up, eat lunch and/or snacks in Ukiah.

From Ukiah we'll ride to Sumpter, stop at the Gold Dredge in Sumpter for a break, then on to Baker City.

It's roughly 225 miles. We originally planned on the Hells Canyon Loop, but it was close to 300 miles and thought that was a little far since most people have to travel so far to get here in the first place.

We'll BBQ at our place Saturday evening. We'll supply the hamburger, buns, and fixings.

Hope you all can make the BBQ Saturday night.

Marianne & I just spent Labor Day weekend in an Idaho Power Campground at Oxbow on the Snake River. It was terrific. We rode north to the Hells Canyon dam a couple of times, East past Brownlee dam and over into Idaho, and north up into Joseph and back. All great rides with very little traffic and pretty clean corners. The ride to Joseph and back has plenty of corners and some good elevation changes so it was very exhilarating (I rode it solo, so it was special). Looking forward to coming here again and also riding west of Baker City. Checked out the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center also, and it was well worth the time.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

I have got my reservations for the Bridgeport Inn, so lets say that is the Base Motel. I also was thinking of picking up RCMC Grand Tour check point in Wollowa some time during the ride. Either on the way, Sunday's ride or on the way back.

Looks like the weather is going to be great. How many are coming? Lets get the lead out and commit.

okay...., I think I'm missing something here.....???

apologies for delayed response but schedule has been up in air for me (one employee on med. leave and another on vacation, a third returning to college next week) This, a six man crew, making it difficult, but not impossible to get a day off. Is it friday or monday??? (not confirmed)

Looks like the Bridge St. Inn will be the place of rendezvous (o.k.)

Will attendees be joining the Sab-Mag group with their different (acceptable) itinerary?

It's roughly 225 miles. We originally planned on the Hells Canyon Loop, but it was close to 300 miles and thought that was a little far since most people have to travel so far to get here in the first place.

To join up with this group ride, travelers would need to take off friday. The other proposal to ride the Hell's Can. Scenic Byway on Sunday (FJR group ride), would necessitate Monday as day off.

Just asking questions here.., seeking clarification, but don't base gathering on me as I'm not even sure if I can get either day off at this point. :(

Fjrroamer,

I haven't heard from FJRJeff and really don't know what is up either on the three day event. I have contacted 650CENT and he and friend have esentially agreed to do this in two days. 650CENT would have been capable of doing a Friday thing, while I was good for Monday. Friday and Monday riding doesn't work for a day ride to Hells Canyon. Ride over on Saturday and back on Sunday.

I have sellected a route up Hwy 14 to Peterson then over to Oregon at Umatilla. Thru Holdman, Elgin, Wallowa, Joseph, Oxbow, Richland to Baker City, (450 miles). A side trip up to the Dam may also be done but the time will be late at that point in the ride(46miles). IF we take that ride we would be able to meet you at Peterson, about the same riding time from Seattle as is from Vancouver on Hwy 14.

If the ride isn't slowed by waystops we should be in Baker City around 7-7:30 and maybe we would still have time to stop in on the BBQ.

Ken

Let us know how you feel about this.

Here is the route I propose: Just a little longer for Seattle folks as it is for PDX folks. We would gather at Paterson on the way and separate at Biggs on the way home. Saturday would be around 450 miles and Sunday would be shorter at 360 miles. (Seattle: 500/473)

If anyone has any suggestions that would improve the route or make offer for voting on:

Also, I don't like delays, especially with LEO, so I usually plan my trips around the stars. I know, I'm nuts, but over the past 30 years this has worked very well. After 8am on Saturday there will be a Jupiter hour, which is good for starting a trip whigh will have no (None) delays. Leaving between 6:53 and 8:00 is a Saturn hour and that hour will surely cause problems (for sure). Maintaining a rest stop every 150 miles, a lunch stop and one gas stop will allow us to travel at approx. a 50 mph average. We should make Baker City by 7:00-7:30pm.

Dude, I'm bummed I can't make this ride. Jupiter and Saturn hours? You sound like a good one to party with! :D

Guys, I'm sorry I've been MIA.

I have to apologize, but I cannot make this ride happen right now.

My wife injured her back, and with a little one running around, I have to tend to both of their needs. Today we also found out her grandmother is in the hospital, so my hands are full for the moment.

This was something I've wanted to do for a long, long time, so I am deeply disappointed that the universe is conspiring against me on this one. Hopefully everyone will be up and running again soon so I can get some more ride time in before the weather turns....

If there is anything I can do to hand off a southern route or help someone pull the ride off, please email me. PM is not the best idea at the moment because I cannot check in very often.

Again, my apologies, but I need to get my family healthy.

Jeff

Hey Jeff, take care of the ones close to you and the ride can wait for another day. Looks like the weather will be primo so they all should have a great ride. Since we did this on the long weekend we wish you all a great ride.

Looking forward to another ride with you so get the family well.

Up Front guys.

I have one more trip to make this year and that is to Wallowa, Or. If necessary, I can do that in one day. I thought the timing for the Hells Canyon Ride would be perfect and let me also ride with some new FJR faces.

Now, if you guys want to do a Pre Winter trial run, check out your heated grips and Gerbings heated clothing, this next week end is perfect. It is predicted that the temps will be in the high 40's and low 50's in the daytime and at or below freezing at night. It is suppose to rain on Saturday which makes a 450 mile day a bummer. With the temps low enough to make any mountain pass have ice, especially after rain, making for a late start on Sunday.

I vote NO for next weekend. Actually, I am backing out. :( :( :( :( :(

The following week end has potential.

Hey,

Bummer. was looking forward to it. Now I guess I have to go to the beach w/ the wife and mother-in-law. Maybe I'll take the FJR and at least make the ride there and back enjoyable. Going to keep am eye on the weather though, and maybe go as far as John Day and ride around that area. I'll wait until the last minute to decide.

Bill

Sounds like this ride is falling apart...bummer.

There will be a BBQ Saturday night in Baker City rain or shine so if you are in town come on down.

My own participation, even for the sabmag ride, is suddenly up in the air after delivering my Mom to an assisted care living facility this past Saturday. She is recovering from trauma associated with falling and is due to come to my house or go home this very next Saturday. Hopefully I can still make it or at least make it a RTE showing up at the Q on Sat.

hmmmm......, in a sick way, I'm feeling better 'bout this because it was looking like I couldn't make this for sure! Now, the possibility of a re-schedule and/or re-working of a get together. The following weekend might be workable for me...., keeping fingers crossed!

Todays weather forcast looks better too. I'll also keep watch, up till Saturday morning 7am.

I'm going to do a ride tomorrow, to Wallowa from Vancouver. 603 miles, will be leaving Vancouver after Breakfast at 8:00am sharp. Will go up Hwy 14 to Umatilla. Then through Holdman, Weston, Elgin and back the same way. Anyone is welcome to tag along, or go on to Hells Canyon.

Ken

Ken, my ST1300 buddy and I are heading up 14 to Pendleton tomorrow morning and then turning south for a loop back to PDX. Could we meet up someplace along Hwy 14? We are planning on leaving Canby, OR about 7:30 and heading up 205 to 14.
