I am looking at the Helmet Guardian locks, and would like to know if anyone has tried to see if the Yamaha ignition key will go into the lock cylinder.

https://www.lockitt.com/accessories_helmet_...#helmetguardian

From the photos, it looks to me like it uses a Yamaha key, and if I does, I suspect I can modify the cylinder so my ignition key will work the lock.

Has anyone tried this?

Fred,

I've got an '06 that I just put the helmet guardians on. I have to go home in a little bit to go pick up my dog so I will check it when I stop in and let you know. Pretty sure I saw a thread that says you can do that by changing the cylinder so that they are keyed alike.

Fred, when I ordered my Helmet Guardian from Cycle Gadgets I specified the Yamaha key type locks. I took the Guardian to my locksmith and had him re-key it using my ignition key. Took ~30 minutes @ $10 per lock. Works great.

Edited:

It looks like they have removed the key choice and it now comes with a Yamaha style key by default.

I had mine re-keyed for the Yamaha key. I also added a pair of side brackets from townsendsfjr1300 at aol dot com

Not sure if those will work with the '06 though.

The Yamaha key will go in the lock but will not work it...
Ahh, but grasshopper, once re-keyd it works slicker 'n snot on a brass doorknob :) Re-keying means taking the tumblers out of the lock and changing them to match the factory FJR key. :D

I'm impressed that ol' Fred can re-key his own tumblers! Think he does his own dental work too?

Ain't nuthin to it. Take the lock apart, put in the key you want to key it to, and install the proper tumbers (or file the existing ones down) to make em line up. I did this to a Concours helmet lock a couple years ago and it worked like a charm. I'll take some photos when I do it and show how to do it yerself.

I always have trouble doing the root canal in the mirror by myself. Last time I drilled a hole in my tounge when the dremel slipped.
