Need help!!

I've got an opportunity to buy a Metzler roadtec for cheap.... problem is that it's a 190-50-17 & stock is a 180-55-17.

Can anybody out there tell me if it will fit or is it too fat?

Thanks in advance .. got to buy a new tire now!!

This has been beaten to death on this and other boards, but a synopsis is that without getting a 6.0 or 6.25 inch wide wheel, which is probably unavailable for an FJR due to rear drive (pumpkin) mating, it will change the profile of the tire in a way that the tire was not designed for -- not good. I'm sure a search of this forum will turn up the full exposition.

EDIT -- I see the profile number is different, too. My comments address only the 180 vis 190 width. You'll have to inquire further regarding how the 50 vis 55 profile affects the equation noted in my comment above.

Having worked for a tire company long ago, I can say that aspect ratios change with tire size equally (most of the time) The wider the tire, the smaller the aspect ratio. The difference 'tween the two is mere millimeters (in Canada anyways) Tire radius should stay constant, however rim width can change that obviously. rambling rambling............sorry

I'm going to a single sided swing arm an' havin' trinni bob mount a ten hunnert twenty on mine. That oughta solve the traction problems eh?

:jester:

Should work out just fine. I'm a terrible cheap skate and mount my own tires so I'm always trying different tires because I buy what's cheap {or in alot of cases, free!}. I've ran everything from Dunlop 220s to Pilot Races and sizes ranging from 170 to a 200 on the back of my FRJ and they all work. Some work better than others but every one of them worked well enough to scrap the pegs while playing on my favorite mountain roads {one set of ancient, thoroughly heat cycled 208s would slide around and spin up a bit while doing that}. Some lasted longer, some felt better, some were better when cold or when wet. Heck, I've even mounted them up backwards and ridden the poo out of them just to see if anything was different {didn't notice a thing}. All were round, held air and rolled. All did exactly what one expected of them. Not a single one blew up, flew off the rim,,,, caught the atmosphere on fire or ripped a hole in the time space continuum.

If it it's cheap,,, give a try. If you don't like the tire it's not like you will be forced to live with it long if your riding habits are anything like mine {average no more than 8K miles even with ST tires}. JMO though and I'm sure others will have their own and I'm sure plenty will think mine suck and if so,,, cool. Whatever floats their boat.

Judd is right 190 spec tire will work fine and you won't notice the size differance-meebee your chicken strips will be a little wider tho..
