Help,,back pain, real high between blades after about 200 miles

im 5'8 with a 31 inch inseam,, had always had bad posture,,, but im coming off a wing ,,,

and i love this bile,,, BUT just got back from my first long trip.. 300 each way, 1 day down,, one day back...

i usually get neck pain and such,, but all good and comfy but for this fatigue back pain right between the blades,, man .. ouch

i think the bars are fine... i took my tank bag and mounted it on the passenger seat and used it for a make shift backrest,, but then could only reach the bars with one hand,, and man that throttle has a spring from hell.. it cracks open or stays shut,, hard as hell to deliver a smooth twist...

any sugestions welcome ......

We are about the same size and i put heli risers and this helped alot, but i have to pass this on...i barely survived my 9th heart attack, no shit, i thought the first 8 were just bad pains between my shoulder blades...i now have had 2 quintuple bypasses, a pacer defib, and my left leg is crap due to the grafts...disabled 100% on ss...its not a bad life..but that 60K loss was heavy man!!! so if it keeps up, go get checked out, k? i want all my feejer bretheren up on 2, dig?

I had the same problem. My neck has some issues anyway and they were exasperated by the riding position of my bike of the time, a Hayabusa.

Sold the Busa and bought the FJR thinking that a little more upright riding position would help. It did, but the thing that helped the most was exercise. I adopted a routine of almost daily stretches, back exercises and abdominal exercises that really improved my riding position and stamina on the bike. No more crippling pain between the shoulders, or anywhere else for that matter, except, of course, my ass, because I'm able to ride so much farther now!

BTW, you and I are the same height. Did you move the bars back to the position closest to the seat?

I'm the same height as you. I added MCLarry risers to the bars and a Universal throttle lock. I rode my bike coast to coast without any pain.

glad to here you are ok,,, i ride peddle bike every other day and no pain under both blades,, it is 100% the bike,, it is the riding position....

but thanks for your concern,,

 
Get the risers. But get that back checked out, sounds like you may have spinal issues as the bicycle position doesn't put the same pressure on same area.

Also..

I rode 15 miles on my huffy the day before I had a quad bypass, so ya might wanna think about the Bobby thing.

Yeah I thought I was ok too. It's a guy thing as Toe, evilmedic and others in the rescue field will attest.

I'm just sayin' :unsure:

Yes they fit. I have an 06 too. btw, I'm 57 so I know a bit about aches and pains. Fortunatly the FJR is a comfortable fit for me. I think the risers will solve most of your problems.
 
Bar risers are probably a good start. Make sure you are always have relaxed arms and hands on the bars. Learning and practicing the 'yoda' position was the biggest help for me.

 
My first long ride on the FJR was a 4000+ mile ride with many 6-10 hour days. I thought the pain would never go away, but it did before the end of the trip, your muscles will adapt faster than you think. Risers would help too :)

Also remember to change your posture a lot. You can on the FJR

 
One thing that might help is to release the middle spring on the throttle one turn. The 06-07 throttle is tight and I found that fixing this made me much more comfortable. This is not the answer but is probably part of the answer. Look it up with a search of the FAQ.

 
All of the above suggestion are great, but first get a throttle rocker and throttlemiester.

Make sure that you are not holding the grips too tight. That causes stress in the shoulders over time learn to hold the handle bars with light pressure when traveling long distance. It has help a great deal to use all of the above.

Last bit of advice try some basic yoga to keep yourself stretched and healthy.

Relax but not too much on your ride have fun and good luck!

BTDT. Different dimensions, but the pain was in exactly the same place. Sore at 200 miles. Downright painful at 300+. Heli-bar risers eliminated the pain the first time I used them. No problem with 500+ miles days after that.

Good suggestions as the others said. Many posts on this subject while using the search feature as well. IMO one of the biggest mistakes rider's make is putting too much weight on the handlebars thus causing neck, shoulder and wrist pain with accompaning numbness in the hands. Focus on keeping a loose grip on the bars with your weight being focused on the pegs with your legs taking the weight of your body. Let the legs be part of the suspension. Even taking your rear off the seat when encountering bumps or chuck holes and such you will get the feel of this. As mentioned the Yoda position has helped me alot and while riding also stay focused on the ride and yourself being in tune with the bike grasshopper. Enjoy. Painman. <>< :D

 
I've not experienced the specific pain you mention, but I believe that a fair portion of it is likely to be tension. As a few of the replies have said, keep your shoulders & forearms relaxed. Drop your shoulders when cornering (left shoulder - left corner etc). Also, the Airhawk seat cushion helps with general comfort, & insulating your tail bone against bumps. You may also have your suspension set too hard for road riding. Try backing off the front rebound & compression damping 2 clicks each, & the same for the rear rebound. Also, if you are riding solo & are not too heavy, try the rear preload on soft. You can always put it back on hard with a pillion, or for more spirited riding.
