Is there anyone here able to help me installing my FF50's? I opened the bike up today to finally do it and my mind is absolutely a blank. I don't know where to start or finish, this is starting to be more of a problem than I want, too many concussions in the last year, they must be adding up.Especially the one that took my speech away for 2 months :angry2:

If it was last year I would've been done by now. I'll go anywhere for help, well maybe not anywhere, but w/in 500 miles. I wanted to do this for a trip to the source of the Mississippi for my b-day next week. I'll still make the trip, but not so many night miles now.

Any help will be generously rewarded, thanks.

Ed, I was just wondering what has happened to you. Havent heard a beep in a while. This weekend is shut, but early next week after hours if you are available we can meet up.

Come to think of it. Maybe we can bribe Martyn, he just installed those same lights and had done it twice in one month.

Well, I don't live near enough to help in person, but I can describe how I installed my FF50s:

First, you need to physically mount the lamps. I assume you have some brackets, maybe from Garauld, and you know that you have to remove the dash panels so you can take off the mirrors so you can use the mirror bolts to retain the brackets. Let me know if you need more details on that.

Next, you need to get the wires from the lamps to the inside of the dash pane;s. If your lamp wires have connectors on them within about a foot from the lamps, then you can drill a hole in the upper dash panel near the lamp so you can push the wires through. Do this on both sides. If you don't have connectors and don't want to add them then you can file some slots in from the edge of the dash panels. The more you think about this and the more carefully you work the better the result will look.

If you plan to use the green switch that came with the lights, then you need to figure out where to put it. I installed mine in the lower left panel. near the flasher switch You need to drill a hole in the panel to fit the switch into. Be careful when you decide exactly where to drill so you have room under the panel to put the nut on and plug the wires in. That flasher switch is pretty big undr the panel.

When I wired my switch I did not want it to glow green when the lights are on, so I left out that part of the wiring. You can easily see that the Hellas are on because the edge of the lamps glows pretty bright.

I used the high beam wire to control the relay so that the Hellas will only go on when both the high beams and the green switch are on. That way I can run the high beams without the Hellas by turning off the green switch, but I can not run the Hellas without the high beams.

The actual power lines for the lights go through the relay and fuse, then directly to the battery.

Let me know if you need more details or pictures.

Oh, ummm, stop banging your head on things....... OK?

It would appear the mechanics of the procedure aren't the issue-but possibly performing the procedure that's bewildering him right now-and I can relate. Being diabetic, if I'm lucky, I can tell when a low is coming on-simple functions become complex, mind numbing exercises in futility. I've been know to become completely befuddled when trying to insert a drill bit, for example-this is when the wife KNOWS I'm going low, and takes proper steps to get me back in tune. I would be happy to help-or even do the install, and I think he's not too awfully far from me, but I know not where to find him. I'm wide open this weekend, so lets get it on.

Ed, is in Chicago, but do not tell him I said so. Crime rate in Chicago is at its highest now and I do not want to be one of the statistics. :)

Rad,

I understand how confusion sometimes sets in, it happens to me once in a while and I don't have a medical excuse. :dntknw: I thought that some clues might help evil get his head around this. It is excellent and not at all surprising that you offered to help out in person.

Well, if it's Chi-Town, he can come here, or me there, but gas is an expense I can't ignore, and the SO has me on a short leash right now, so ????????? The install, however, is quite do-able.

What days and/or times are good for you? You are literally on the route I was going to take to Lake Bemidji, so it only makes sense to head that way. Plus I get a nice ride out of it!

Trust me, the recovery is a lot longer than I thought it would be. One guy I 've talked to said after a pretty severe concussion his ability to speak spanish went from fluent to barely ordering a burrito. He had a degree in Spanish.

I work this saturday so I'm shot until monday. I just have to be home by wednesday afternoon, or my wife will kill me on my b-day. It would save math problems for age at time of death. :D

Well, I can be sick Monday or Tuesday, if it can only be done in the middle of the week, but I would prefer a weekend job. Timewise, depends on how fancy you wanna get. Set up like mine, with the Hella's activated in line with the high beams, and no separate switching (recommended), fast install. Get all gimmicky on me, longer...... :p

Hows this for a set up?

The only question I have is about the kits switch, do I need a ground as well? The schematic doesn't help me there.

85 is the signal switch-a wire tapped into the high beam side of a headlight will then trigger the Hellas on with them. This setup eliminates any extra switches-they'll only come on with the high beams, a preferred setup in my opinion.

True, but the problem here in a flat land is we travel alot in the area where we can not use the high bean due to traffic, but would like a bit more for safety. So, as long as a bike can handle powering these and regular or a high beam I would wire it independently.

I wired mine using the switch that came with the ff50's fed off of the high beam circuit. That way, I CAN turn off the ff50's and still run the bikes high beams. I mounted the aux switch next to the left side grip so I can access it with my thumb. Works great! I like having the lil' green light glowing when the ff50's are on. Sometimes I need a reminder that I've got them on.
