Help removing heated grips?

I got my Delrin G2 throttle tube in the mail yesterday and am dying to try it out, but have been unable to get the stock heated grips to come off (in spite of the little air compressor I picked up today).

The local Yamaha shop claims "Oh, yeah, those are epoxied on. We just cut 'em off - new grips are $320."

I know people aren't running around dropping $300 on new grips all over the place, so obviously (a) the local shop is full of crap (which is why I didn't buy a bike from them in the first place - they were also saying $600 for the first service, which is laughable) and ( B) I'm missing the magic secret.

Anybody in the Northern Colorado area want to show me how it's done sometime this week (Ft. Collins, Loveland, Greeley) ? Drop me a PM if you've got the knack.

 
Heated grips are a dog to get off-I tried the air compressor method and got no success. What did work eventually was to take a long thin Phillips screwdriver and work it under the grip and then roll and slide it around while shooting WD40 alongside using the straw. Apparently the dealer glued the hell out of it. Took about 20 minutes, a beer and some new words..At least you only have to get one off to put the G2 on..and the G2 is great.

 
If they are the Hot Grips brand they are indeed epoxied on. If the recomended epoxy was used then you can wrap the grip with towels and run them on high heat for around 20 minutes and the glue should soften enough to remove the grip. If the grip was installed with JB weld like I did because I was to lazy to get the right stuff then it is there forever. If I need mine off the throttle side I will have a new tube on hand along with the right glue.

 
I just finished doing this and it is nothing to fear. Use the WD-40 and the small screw driver. As you get the WD under the grip try twisting the grip. It will break loose a little at a time and you will have to keep moving the screw driver up farther and squirting in more WD. Eventually the whole grip will spin. Take off the rip then clean out the WD. It should take about 5 minutes. The dealer uses YamaBond to put them on. There is no need to cut them off.

As you have the solution, can I hijack your thread to ask about doing the same thing but with aftermarket grip heaters? I mean the kind that self-adhere to the bars and then you put the grip on under 'em? I've got 'em on my Gen 1, but find that the throttle is much warmer than the left side grip. Yeah, no duh, it heats up all that metal too. But I'm thinking about peeling that one off, putting down some insulation (like what?), and then resticking it.

Suggestions?
