Hey everyone. So I am trying to figure out a way to get out to Detroit to bring the wife to a Red Wings game at the Joe Louis Areana. Her dad used to go all the time (he passed away several years ago). After she was born in Detroit, she left the hospital in a Red Wings jersey. She has always dreamed of going before they tore down the Areana which they are doing next year.

So, I am trying for the April 6th game. Do you know of a way to get a deal on plain tickets? So far the cheapest that I am seeing is around $700+ just for plain tickets for both of us. I am going to try to find a deal on flights and stay like 2 or 3 days. I will still have to buy tickets for the game as well.

Gonna try to keep this a surprise. I will talk to her boss to get her the time off. I have a few friends that I will stay with and that will give me a vehicle to use while I am out there.

Thanks for the info!!

Carl

You could rent yourself out but at best you would only get a nickle and some small change.

Other than that I've got no useful ideas.

Sometimes you get better rates if you stay a longer time or over a complete weekend. Try playing with the dates and avoid flying on a Friday or the weekend.

My daughter is going to school in portland,OR right now. We have found the best deals with southwest airlines typically 90 to 110 days out from the flight date. We have found calling them directly has netted better prices versus the discount travel websites.

My suggestion, is don't **** around. This is a very special moment for you and her, get the tickets in hand, and never look back.

Nothing like going to the Joe! Best hockey team in the world. I hope you have a great time. I have no suggestions on travel, but April 6 is Fan Appreciation Night!!! I would love to go too, I'll check into it.......

$700+ for 2 tickets sounds about right. It would take you 2 days of driving with the rest, one way. Epic road trip :)

Not know what dates you are leaving etc. Found RT for one adult was 366 on southwest as mentioned before play with the dates to get best fare.

I tried that once, I went broke...

I am waiting for a check to come in to buy the tickets.

That would be cool if we were able to meet up to go.

I was thinking about flying out on the 5th as to not take too much time off of work.

Google Flights

A lesser known tool, but I think it is quite useful. You can look at multiple airlines, multiple airports, multiple destinations, and multiple dates at the same time. $543 is what I found for you on United. Flying back Tuesday coming back Thursday.

You could also try a travel agent. Doesn't cost any more to use them, but the generally have the best deals on packages. Flight, hotel, & car. Although Detroit is no exotic destination, so maybe not. Nobody says you have to buy what they find.

A game at the Joe is pretty cool. I've watched a few games, even some playoff games.

Thank you for the info guys. Another trick that I learned as we is while searching, open an "Incognito" page. That way, every time you look at a price page, the price doesn't keep going up. It is working so far. Another tip is to Not listen to FJRay...

Just for that the price just went up on your next Reuben.:) :) :)

They aren't tearing down the arena next "hockey" year, the fall 2016-spring 2017 season will still be played at Joe Louis, with the new arena opening for the fall 2017-spring 2018 season. If you want it to be truly the last season played at the Joe, then you should wait until next year's Farewell season.

Regardless of when you come, another option for flights could be to fly into Flint rather than Detroit. It's further away, but if you're coming for a few days and renting a car, it's not likely to be a big deal. Flint is (or, at least, was, I haven't flown out of there in a few years) a much nicer airport to go through - signifcantly smaller and less people than Detroit. I'm not sure if the flights are still typically cheaper, but it's another option to consider.

Fixed for you. I'm sure OM would agree (if I paid for his tickets).
