Imagine the older gentleman riding his Wing into the garage, clumsily hitting the far wall and being caught by the Missus as he's trying to wrestle the airbag off his face. Not a pretty picture... :D

Kinda remindes me of the scene in the movie Airplane when the chick had to re-inflate the Autopilot :D

If it saves one life or greatly reduces the severity of injury,i can put up with the crap.
I appreciate the idea behind an airbag- but is this going to help prevent injury? As Warchild mentioned (and I had previously, elsewhere)- the deployment system better be damn well thought out, or it'll do more harm than good.

Think "deer strike", for example (Warchild flinches...). Without the airbag, you might be able to ride it out. But if that thing deploys, you're blind and a crash is likely imminent. Because of how airbags work, when you do actually crash, it'll have deflated enough that it won't be useful.

I'll pass, at least for now.

According to the WSJ article today, the air bag is "designed to protect drivers (their word) in full frontal accidents, which account for 62% of all motorcycle mishaps in the US" according to gov't statistics. Looks like it adds about $1400 to the cost of the bike.

Article goes on to say there were many technical hurdles to overcome...I bet

Final paragraph says BMW has been developing air bags for years, but hasn't marketed them because of questions of how practical it is....

There's an article about this in the Houston Barnicle today... my first impression was that the rider had stuffed a "hefty" sized lower torso from a blow up sex doll into his console.... :haha: And as has been mentioned above in this thread, could be a significant embar"ass"ment if deployed. The Barnicle also shows a series of head on crash photos, showing the rider being slowed down from being thrown into the front of the bike. Don't imagine it would do a damn bit of good in a "rear end" collision, or being hit from the side, or if you laid the bike down.

This seems to have all the makings of a "soup sandwich".... the photo at the beginning of this thread also looks like it's got a maxi-pad stuffed in the "crack".... they definately need to steer away from the color pink for the airbag...

I find it mind boggling that Honda didn't consider the look of all the pictures that people would have of the airbag and make the damn thing white or beige or something other that butt-colored. Sheeze.

Perhaps they made it that color for a different reason.....

Nice work WC...... :p
Heh.... not my work; I actually ripped this image off from my Blackbird forum.

Myself and the guys on the XX forum are really pissed at Honda at the moment, since it appears we will have no new Blackbird for 2006....

What a great picture!

I can understand you XX weenies being upset, Dale. You guys have been following the carrot in front of your nose for what? Three years now?

Pretty lame that Honda has ceded that market to Suzuki and Kawasaki and their Hayabusas and ZX-12s.

But then, I also wonder why Yammie has chosen never to play in that particular arena?

At any rate, disappointing regardless. My sympathies.

Freaking Honda weenies. :tease:

WC- :haha:

You know, the sad part is that SOMEONE out there would probably order that!

Hey speaking of that vest...the only one I ever saw was the prototype Dainese was working on; last I heard they were trying to fine tune the sensors so it wouldn't 'go off' prematurely; an embarrassing problem, for sure....

Frickin hillarious Dale.....

I'd love to know if anybody who has a wing and frequents some wing forum can point me to a discussion by wing owners of this new "benefit"...

Just for a moment here, some serious rad. Other advances in skootertech have also been laughed at-and have become standard. Electric foot, disc brakes, monoshocks, FI, and lately, ABS, the latter with many non-believers still dissing the new tech, but a safety feature fast becoming standard or at least available on many high-perf tourers, with more to come, I'm sure. The air bag was introduced, believe it or not, as an option on 74 Toronados, and was ridiculed by many, but look at them now. Standard on every 4 wheeler out there, but mainly because of the US passive restraint standard, not because of a perception or proof of life saving capability. Not that they haven't-but only because people still refuse all too often to wear seatbelts, which the air bag supplements , not replaces. While the air bag has worked out fairly well on autos and trucks, especially since the technology has improved with time and experience, I just don't see it working well on motorcycles, even with tech improvements. They add weight, which would preclude their use on sportbikes, they require space and sensors, ditto, and they add substantial cost, which, if $1400 is gonna be a starting point, would be a substantial portion of the price of buying a bike, which is gonna steer people away from those having them, unless it is mandated for all. Like those in use in most 4 wheelers, they protect only in frontals, and then only to a small degree, due to the fact that they only slow down, not prevent, ones exit from the vehicle. Where in cars they act in concert with the structures protective capabilities, no such structure exists on a motorcycle. Unless Joan Claybrooks 3 wheeled monstrosity is mandated as the standard of construction, I just don't see it's widespread acceptance as a safety device.
