Computer discs have gone missing, carrying the personal data of all families with children who claim child benefit (everyone with kids is eligable for this and claims it....including me!!).

The discs were being transfered from one government department to another and 'got lost'. They contain personal data such as all names and address details for every houshold, and some bank account details too, although how many is not known yet.

I also read this story on the Sydney Morning Herald today (I am an Aussie living in the US) and it also concerned me as I lived and worked in the UK and I have a UK Social Security number.

I just figure that if anyone assumes my identity the first I will know about it is the next time I go through Heathrow.

Cheers mate, heads about to roll I reckon, it falls in the remit of the Chancellor who is already under pressure over the Northern Rock Bank collapse. He was seen at Prime Ministers question time having to hold his own wrist while drinking water as his hand was shaking so much. Its a major, major cock up.

We just received a letter from the Customs & Excise people appologising and saying that we are one of the families who's details are on the discs. Names, address, national insurance details and bank details. They have guaranteed we will not lose any money and say there is no evidence that the discs have fallen into the wrong hands just that they are lost.

So there is no proof they have not fallen into the wrong hands. No proof they have either. Therefore no change but platitudes expressed by beaurocrats ...... grrrrrrr
