That's awesome!!!! Can I get another bike for off road pretty please!
https://www.azbeemers.org/forum/index.php?t...g17644#msg17644 Bigbeavk, in 1st post of this thread is a map showing the location of the Kofa Road. I've lived in Arizona third of my life, with street bikes and dirt bikes in my garage, and I've never boondocked this trek. My Arizona Atlas & Gazetteer has shown this for years as only accessible by horse, mule or on foot. But it clearly can be negotiated by a BMW G450GS and two R1200GS bikes. I am going to scout this out in my Jeep, perhaps see if GalaxyBlue-Adam, our FJR Forum Admin, wants to come along with me in his Super Jeep. Big-D of Lake Havasu has quads, I'll see if Dan wants to ride this also!

If it appears passable for my riding skills on 2 wheels, I'll organize a trip out to the Kofa Wilderness in late October, with a night spent camping at the same location as AZBMWRIDER, ROUNDEL and Dirt Jet used. I want to plan this to coordinate with ShinyPartsUp being here on his Kawasaki KLR 650; before Copper Canyon trip!

Great photos. They give the impression that the trail is not TOO difficult although that does depend on how soft the sand is. If your recce missions deems it to be doable, we might be able to join you for the ride, if we're invited. I have a 650GS and Andy has a 1200GS. If the trails are a lot more technical, we each have a smaller bike but haven't carried camping gear on those before.

La Pinguina Plata: You and Andy were the first I was going to inform of exploring Kofa Wilderness. I'll see Dan and Adam soon and we'll scout this out muy pronto!!!

Gorgeous Views. I've never ridden sand -- looks like a learning experience worth doing. I don't think I'll be down that way until the first few days of November though. Thank you for sharing Beemerdons

Sand is....... interesting. I haven't ridden much else but I know that I don't care for deep, soft sand. The bike doesn't want to go where you want it to go. Instinct tells you to slow down under such poor traction conditions but that just makes things worse. It really goes against the grain to go faster but that's what seems to settle the bike down.

Should carry a folding shovel though. Bikes have a habit of getting buried and having to be dug out. I've never had to actually DIG, but had have to get off and walk alongside the bike until I had enough traction to ride.

That is some beautiful country out there. I've spent some time working on the ranges of Yuma Proving Ground, just south of this area and often thought about what it would be like banging around all that beautiful scenery on a dirt bike. Glad to see some lucky folks get to do it. Enjoy!

I agree with you 100% Jill. I dislike deep Sand... and so does my KLR, "Ruby" - I gave it my great-granny best but Ruby decided to throw herself down while coming up out of one of those whoop-de-do AZ washes. We landed so hard the front fairing re-arranged itself to the right and I got the giggles lying there with my foot stuck under the bike. I gave it another go once more on another "road" and it took me an hr and 1/2 to slog through 10 miles of the stuff. I would have liked to start out sand riding on a smaller bike.

Can't imagine doing sand on a bigger bike, especially for the first time. I learned my off-road skills (what few I have) on a TTR-125 which was a perfect bike for me to start on. That bike took several impromptu naps in the sand. The Honda 230 that I replaced it with has followed suit but not quite as frequently. One of the things I've learned is that it's easier to keep the bike upright than to keep picking it up. Doesn't always work that way but I'm trying hard, with the heavier bike.

Next trip to the desert, I'm going to aim for some sand washes and deliberately practice some deep sand riding, to see if I can get any better at it.
