Had similar experiences on my NAFO ride [which inlcuded the midwest & a stop in Sturgis], mostly 90+ temps [save @ higher elev.]. Hottest actual temp was 107 leaving Oregon [1st day out] but I found that w/ the windshield down & vents open I was for the most part reasonably comfy in full gear as long as I was moving [i did wear jeans some of the trip & bought a pair of summer weight gloves halfway along]. The flip-front helmet was a blessing when passing thru towns @ slower speeds. The one tough stint was thru Iowa where while it was only ~92degrees, but was also about 95% humidity, ...pretty sticky even when moving & downright drippy when stopped!! My helmet got wet inside in Iowa and never dried out [even in ACd motels overnite] til I reached Wyoming a week later! I walked out of an air-conditioned restaurant there at about 10:30pm and my glasses instantly fogged over, yech! Sweaty heat is not that much fun, yet I've always figured it's still far & away preferable to the heat you'd experience laying in a 'burn unit' w/ major roadrash!
Crossed paths w/ numerous [needless to say] Harley riders from South Dakota onward and actually rec'd quite a number of kind and appreciative words & compliments on the FJR from any number of them! I'll also have to admit that if a relaxed road trip is your cuppa tea, then the Road King & big Glide riders looked as comfortable as anyone I saw out there [though some of their more 'bad-boy styled bretheren looked anything but]! Some of the bugs that died on my faceshield hit w/ such a resounding WHACK that I cringe to think what it woulda felt like on a bare face [so much for their beenies or sans-helmet riding]! On the western Interstates I was consitently rolling throttle-locked in the mid-high 80s, and had several of the big beasts motor casually past me [including one two-up pair dragging a trailer]. In the end, it's all about preference & we're all brothers on the road!
