hesitation and noise at idle

Just got my 09 fjr last weekend and really love this ride over my vtx. I have a question when idling at 1000rpm and you give it some throttle there is a hesitation and a noise like in the engine then it goes to rpm. If you hold it at say 1500 or so then throttle it there is no hesitation or noise. Is this normal? Thanks

Are you referring to a "clunk"? It's perfectly typical for the FJR until it's good and warmed up. Plus, bump the idle up a touch to around 1100rpm.

I guess you can call it a clunk its almost like having a chain drive with a lot of slack in it give it throttle and got to take up all the slack with the noise then go. Its idleing a little above 1000 and was ridden 45 miles. If this is normal I will just ride it :) . Sorry for the double post just excited about posting about my new ride!!

 
If you're in motion and running "at idle" at 1000 rpm, then you're lugging the motor. The in-neutral idle is 1100rpm. 1000 needs to be adjusted up. If you're riding then the red line is 9k rpm and you should be cruising around 3k+ rpm. in commuter traffic, i seldom let it get below 2500 rpm if i can help it.

if you're coming from a VTX then consider that the FJR isn't designed to run at such low RPMs.

I know your noise . If you really lug it or right off idle there is a growlly noise. i don't know if it is caused by the clutch, tranny, conter balancer ,or what , but I think it's a common noise for this bike. Like has been said, don't lug it ,and turn the idle up a little.

 
So what is the shift points of the FJR?

From the LT we ran the rpms up she never really responded till around 4500-5000 then to 8 she was wicked. I am assuming the FJR likes higher rpms also? I also see some complaining from shiffting problems. On the LT we kind of pe-loaded the shifter and kept the rpms up to match the gear.

So can anyone splain what the FJR likes in rpm and gear change technique?

The shift points are wherever you feel like shifting. Avoid lugging the engine, but if you want to shift at 4000 rpm, shift then. If you like to rev the engine higher, shift at a higher rpm. It is a matter of personal preference, riding style, riding conditions, desired mileage, etc.

The FJR likes a good solid shift--no tentative or dainty shifting. Just shift like you mean to and you won't have shifting issues. After each shift you must remove all load on the shift lever or you cannot shift again.
