I had a brush with the pros yesterday. I was coming off the I-15 at Pomerado Rd (in San Diego for those that don't know). I saw a bunch guys all wearing Team Gerolsteiner clothing. Thinking that it was kind of odd, I looked a little closer. They were all riding Specialized bikes. I'm sure they were on a training ride. I rode with them for a few miles before I turned off to go home.

I had seen they had put their names on their bikes. After I got home, I looked up the 2008 team roster. Sure enough it was them. There were only six or seven of them on the road today. I can only think they were down here training for the Amgen tour.

It made my day. How often do you get to ride with pro riders!!??

Different pro teams have been using the San Diego area for years. My mother told me that she had seen a bunch of CSC riders the other day also in the area.

I used to go to San Diego in the early 90's for December to train when I was racing. Used to run into alot of the big name racers from back then, like Tony Rominger. They came with there families to get away from the press and bad weather in europe. You realize the diffence between them and the local pro when they are riding up the hill near Torry pines in the big ring with out suffering and everybody else is dying just trying to keep up. Great bunch of guys to ride with though.

Lots of teams train in California in January. I was in Solvang last week and Toyota United was there in force. Discovery used to train out of Solvang. It's good riding weather, nobody in the U.S. bothers the European pros, and the Tour of California is the first big race of the season. What's not to like.

Yeah, you have to ride across the bridge to get from the Escondido side to the San Diego side. The only other way is to ride about 20 miles through Escondido and suffer up some large hills. Even then, you have to ride along state route 78. That's worse than the 15.

I've done a lot of cycling over the years but for some strange reason, I haven't been on my bicycle for almost two years... hey, wait a minute... yep, that's exactly when I got the feejer!!

I need to get on it soon though as I am plannining a cycling trip through France and Italy next summer to celebrate my 40th.

I used to work in Rancho Bernardo, about a lifetime ago. That section of I-15 is posted as a bicycle route, little green signs and all. Didn't much like riding on it, but as stated there really is no alternative route. The shoulder is a good 15 feet wide, so it's safe enough, just not very quiet.

When I would ride my bicycle from L.A. to San Diego, we'd have to hop on I-5 for a stretch between Las Pulgas and Hwy 76. Lots of fun with all that traffic whizzing by.

I rode with them for a few miles before I turned off to go home.
The real story...rickysnickers rotated to the front of the peloton then set a pace that Gerolsteiner couldn't match, popping them off the back one by one :D . Then he got bored and went home. :D

Anybody doing the Tour of Palm Springs this weekend? Should be sunny and 74 degrees with no wind. I will be there with my team, the much less famous Orange Coast Velos. They do the course in 5 hours overall. I might get dropped. Don't know till you try.

Oh how I wish that was true!! HAHAHAHAHAA!!! At 40 years old, I was just happy to be able to catch up to them and hang on.

Oh and the Marines finally let riders use the base to get between Oceanside and San Clemente. I have heard that it's hit and miss though. They do check IDs.
