In June, my brother and I will be heading from the Mobile, AL area to Robbinsville, NC (starting the day in central MS). I hear horror stories about Atlanta traffic. What's the best/fastest way to route through the Atlanta area if we hit the area early afternoon?

Thank you,

What day of the week?

Stick to the major highways and get through downtown ATL by 3pm and you'll be ok. Although, If there is a daytime Braves game there will not be much traffic relief in the afternoon. Any later than 3pm, especially if it's a Friday or a Braves evening game, and you will start hitting what I like to call the South's largest parking lot.

Good luck!

That time of day, your best bet is straight thru downtown. Bikes can run the HOV lanes and they typically move well. Just know the traffic around here could be considered aggressive so keep your head up and and eye on the surroundings. Once you get clear of the city to the north side, there are lots of good roads up to Robinsville. PM me if you'd like some route options.

I'm looking at south to north routes through town.... If I want to end up on 400/19 through Northridge/Alpharetta area would it be better to take 285 around the west side of Atlanta (mapping software default), or take 75 through downtown and catch the 400 toll road?

If I take the toll road, is it a stop and pay cash type toll or is it like here in the DFW area where you have a tag and if no tag, they snap a picture of your license plate and send you the bill without making you stop at a toll booth?

take 285 around the west side to just past roswell rd. bear rt to go north on 400. no tolls at all on that part of the 400. all tolls are inside the loop of 285. Get up to dahlonega take 60 to the split at the famous rock pile. go right at the pile down to turners corner and head north on 129 from there.

When you get up to robbinsville check out Fontana dam. This is where they filmed part of the fugitive. also dont miss joice Kilmer memorial forest right off cherohala skyway. monster old growth trees that have limbs as big as 100 year old oaks trees themselves. also go down river road which is at the Tellico plains tn end of the skyway. it is way cool as it follows a whitewater river about 18 miles down to the end. bald river falls is on it and it is huge, there is a old shot out motel down there called green cove in and a beer joint surrounded by a old trailer camp that goes up the hill. Tellico has a couple of good spots to grab chow and a bunch of biker hoodlums hang out at the exxon gas place right at the end of Cherohala. coming back south to atlanta take the nc rt 28 known as moonshiner 28 all the way to 19 and then follow 19 south along the river until it hooks back with 129. 28 is right near the tail of the dragon hangout spot. need anymore info just chime in because i know every inch of the roads from atlanta all the way up to virginia. If you are going north on Blueridge pkwy stop at my buds place www.switzerladinn.com at mile post 334 north of ashville for the best food in the mountains. Litte switzerland is also the start of the diamondback route also known as nc rt 226a. it rivals the dragon without the daredevil punks going 125 on the gixxers

IF YOU HIT ATLANTA EARLY, BY 2PM YOU PROBABLY WON'T HAVE ANY PROBLEMS GOING STRAIGHT INTO TOWN AND HITTING 400 NORTH.

IT IS A TOLL AND YOU'LL HAVE TO STOP.TAKE 400 APP 50 MILES TIL IT ENDS AT HIWAY-60. LEFT THROUGH DAHLONEGA AS GA CYCLE RIDER-- CHIP SAID.

IF YOU HAVE TIME YOU HAVE A LOT OF OPTIONS UP TO ROBBINSVILLE. ANOTHER ONE IS TO TAKE 60 ALL THE WAY UP TO 68 IN TENN. THAT WILL TAKE YOU TO TELICO PLAINS WHERE YOU CAN GET ON THE CHEROHALA SKYWAY AND HEAD RIGHT OVER TO ROBBINSVILLE.IF YOU STAY IN ROBBINSVILLE YOU CAN DO A NICE LOOP UP 129 TO DEALS GAP RIDE THE GAP INTO TENN TAKE A LEFT ON HIGHWAY 72 TO 411. A SHORT HOP ON 411 MAYBE 2-3 MILES OR LESS TO HIGHWAY 360. THIS IS A NICE SCENIC WINDING ROAD THAT WILL DUMP YOU BACK OUT ON THE CHEROHALA. LEFT BACK OVER TO ROBBINSVILLE.IT'S A NICE LOOP.OF COURSE WHEN YOU GET TO DEALS GAP YOU CAN GO RIGHT AT 28 OVER TO FONTANA AND SEE THE DAM. THERE IS A NICE MOTORCYCLE CAMPGROUND PAST FONTANA CALLED IRONHORSE THEY HAVE GOOD FOOD THERE AND A NICE PLACE OVERALL.HAVE FUN

I think your biggest concern will be the idiots driving the cars. I go to great lengths to stay off of 285 and 75 (inside the perimeter) because the folks out here drive aggressively. They will tail you, cut you off, and pull right out in front of you all while surfing the net on their iPhones.

I suggest:

  • High visibility clothing
  • Stay in tight groups with your riding partner
  • Hold your ground and don't let the traffic flow faster than you
  • Use the HOV lane
  • Watch out for cops

And above all...ride safe. :gun:

Not to drag up an old post...but I just drove through Atlanta at 5pm yesterday from Rome GA to Charlotte NC. It reminded me of that game Frogger!
