Last year I installed a Blue Sea power distribution box using the auto retract as my 12v relay switched source. Everything worked fine. Yesterday, my first ride for the year towards the end of the day my GPS shut down having lost power while in the cradle on the bike. When I got home I tested the distribution box for power and there wasn't any? I then dug out the relay and discovered moisture had corroded the interior which I thought was the problem? I replaced the relay with a new one today and after plugging it in I turned the bike key to the on position? I heard what may have been a little pop? I also noticed no high pressure pump noise at this time as well? Again with the key on I checked the pdb for power and there wasn't any? Also the wind screen no longer works up or down as it did before? The dash sweeps and the starter cranks but the bike of course will not start? I don't have a manual or a lot of (any) electrical background so suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Mark

If you heard a little pop, the first thing I would suggest would be to double check all the fuses. Sounds like you blew one.

What little I know so far. I turn the key and both dials sweep, dash lights up, digital readout seems ok? The tail light and brake light don't seem to be affected? When I push starter the engine cranks but doesn't fire. The headlights don't come on with the starter being pushed, they used to. The windshield up/down rocker gets no action as well? There is power to the 12v relay receiver housing but not to the switched connection? So what seems to be affected are the headlights, and the power to the windshield motor as well as the fuel pump? Perhaps other systems but, they are not obvious to me.

Remove the panel covering the battery and look at all the fuses. Since you have power, the main 50 amp fuse is obviously good. The fuses are pretty well labeled so once you find it, you're half-way there. Your next challenge is to find the short to ground in the associated wiring to the fuse block.

Good point! I've only been looking at the fuse which is supposed to be associated with the EFI which is a 15 amp. It checked out so I didn't look carefully at the rest! I think I will remove the tank and check the wire going to the pdb as it passes over the engine area which could be trouble? I will update.

I found a 10A fuse blown! The diagram under the fuse box lid indicates "Back up"? Not sure what Back-up means but, replacing the bad fuse with a good one the bike starts and the windshield motor works! I did not replace the pdb relay as that was when I heard the fuse pop the first time. I will remove the tank and trace the pdb line back looking for bad stuff. I had a low side last year and my bike was at the dealer for a couple of months getting repaired and maybe "they" pinched the wire during re-assembly? Or maybe it got hot somewhere and the shielding went south? If someone reading this has the manual for the 08 model I would appreciate the reference to the "Back up" fuse as described inside the lid of the fuse box. Thanks

SUCCESS! The problem isn't with the bike or it's wiring! I was sold the wrong 12V relay. Before pulling the wire to my pdb I phoned the electrical shop where I purchased the new relay from; telling them that after I plugged in the new relay and turning on the bike a fuse blew? After asking a few more questions they asked me to return the relay and replace it with another one? Something about one having a suppressor and the other not? After installing the replacement everything works just fine!!! Thanks to those who offered their help. Now I have to put most of the plastic back on, happily.

It's interesting how my brain works? The last place I would have looked for a solution to my problem would have been the "New-est" part? After a night of little sleep worrying I was prepared to take more hard bits off the bike to try and expose the gremlin hiding in there! I should say having owned this bike since new and putting nearly 60,000 kms on it, I haven't had one little thing go wrong. I guess what I'm saying is even though by looking through this section of the forum it may appear as if the bike "FJR" has a few issues, I am more than totally satisfied with this great machine! Just saying!
