High RPM stumble

I’ve noticed that my bike will “fall on its face” or stumble at high rpm during hard acceleration. The first few times this happened, I assumed that I had hit fuel cut at Red line. However, when I actually tried to repeat the issue while looking at the Tachometer, the stumble was occurring at about 6500rpm in 1st gear.

It happens in other gears, always under hard acceleration.

Anybody having similar experience?

This is due to the detuned 2006 model. There is no cure!

When you say stumble... Does it totally shut down causing you to lurch forward? It seems like maybe you have some bad gas or possibly a injector problem.

Haven't experienced anything of the sort. My '06 pulls hard all the way to the top...not that I ride that way very often. :p

For starters, I would take a look at the plugs.

My AE does this as well. Most often from a rolling start from midway in the rpm band in lower gears. Whack it open and as it gets near redline feels as though rpm limiter is kicking in too soon. The engine doesn't totally shut down but just quits pulling hard as though fuel starved. Funny thing is it doesn't do it all the time. Usually happens in first or second and maybe third {not sure} but I haven't experienced it enough to get a good idea of the exact details. Is yours an '06 or an AE? My '05 didn't do this.

I took it out today and confirmed the condition several times. I get it in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Then I'm going to fast to worry about the problem at that point.

I'm at 3/4 to full throttle and once I hit the wall it does not make any difference if I whack the throttle at all.

Someone asked if the tank had been off. It has. The dealer took it off to replace a "bad TPS" and sync the throttle bodies in a vane attempt to get rid of the off-idle stumble / hick-up that these bikes have.

I have just over 4K miles on it so I find it hard to believe the plugs are bad. Especially since I've first saw the problem about 2K miles ago. But who knows.

It does not fell like fuel cut. It feels like I'm dropping two cylinder or they are all going really lean. The problem comes in between 6.5 - 7K rpm.

I'll have to pull the tank up and take a look for the kinked line suggestion.

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

If you're going to have the tank up anyway you might as well look at the plugs and reseat the wires. My stock plugs were looking pitted and a bit ugly at 4K, though 2K sure does sound early.

I think you've described it more acurrately than I did. I'm sure I'm experiencing the same problem as you. My bike has 2800 miles and I just noticed the problem at about 2000 miles. Does your bike do it every time you run it through the gears or is it only occasional? The weather is supposed to warm up here for a few days. I'll get out and see if I can get a better idea of the symptom and report back.

I tried to replicate the stumble today but couldn't make it happen. It performed flawlessly despite rpeated trips to the redline in the lower gears. The only explaination for this is that I installed a Power Commander. It hasn't exhibited the stumble problem since. Suggest you install a PC3. Case closed.

[SIZE=12pt]Early On, it was more intermittent. However, it seems to be consistent now. Since it takes such a hard acceleration run, I cannot say it does it every time I run the bike. All I can say is that it has done it every time I've tried to duplicate it recently.[/SIZE]

I did do the infamous "barbarian mod" on the bike to correct the low speed twitchiness. I did the standard +7 that everyone else is doing.

I still have not lifted the tank yet to check the fuel supply or plugs. That is a next weekend project.

OK guys, finally had time to take a close look at this situation.

The good news is that I seem to have found the source of the problem :D

Seems my wonderful local Yamaha dealer service technicians (I use that term loosely) kinked my fuel line when they were under the tank some time ago. This would be the fuel line that says all over it "do not kink fuel line".

This all makes sense now as the bike was clearly running out of fuel, not spark.

The bad news is this is at least the 3rd significant brain fa*t that these guys have performed on my bike. :dribble: :angry2: :angry2:

I'm not sure why the AE bike needed a Power Commander to fix the problem but when I took my bike out after correcting the fuel like routing it ran up to redline without trouble.

Info provided for the good of the cause!!!

Perhaps my bike was running so lean with the Muzzy full system, without the PC3, that it caused the stumble. I didn't notice it before I installed the muzzy system and it hasn't happened since I installed the PC with Muzzy map. Whatever. It's runnig strong and fine now.
