Has anyone ever hit one of these dam things at speed? I wonder if the FJR would go over it OK.

What is the best technique if you have to hit one? I would think that treating it like a headon hit would be the best.

Doc

Lift your ass off the seat and pull back on the bars. No fast, herky jerky movements, ease yourself over it and you'll be fine. I've hit some pretty big ones and never had a big scare...

I agree with the other advice. Best to avoid if you can. I hit one of those damn things in my Jaguar sedan a couple years back on the 134E here in Cali and did $5000 worth of damage to the front end of my car.

F'in retreads should be illegal.

Retreads shouldn't be illegal. Leaving them in the middle of the road should be. But, there's no real penalty for it. When was the last time you heard of someone getting a fine for littering?

About the same time I heard of a cell-phone talking airhead crossing 3 lanes on the freeway to make an off-ramp without a signal getting cited for unsafe lane change.

I'm not exactly sure, but rumor has it that it was a re-tread carcass that brought down Andy Mills and his 04' in this years Iron Butt Rally.

My avoidance strategy is just that. I avoid all manner of debris and BDC behavior by keeping my eyes peeled for EVERYTHING.

I've ridden PAST hundreds of treads, never OVER one.

Ride safe,

GZ

Hey Madmike2,

In the Beantown area (Boston), folks on the Mass pike have been doing this since loooonng before cell phones. First time I saw it my jaw hit the floor. After the 4th or 5th time it started to not phaze me. This was back in 79-81 when I lived up there.

I've been back a few times (for the chowdah) and usually see the triple lane change trick (no signal) to the exit at least once.

Haven't figured out if they check the road first or if they're just really whacked...

Yeah, I heard that too, buy this is what I don't get. If that story is true, why couldn't the two riders that were in sight behind him substantiate the rumor?

And......has anybody checked the accident report completed by the highway patrol? I bet it will have some pertinent info as to what caused the wreck. Or at least it should.

I had to duck from a hunk of truck tire coming at me from over the expressway divider once. I wasn't wearing a helmet (never wore one) when I was riding the Harley but almost started.

I won't leave home without a helmet now, the FJR has a need to run a little faster ;) .

If you can't avoid it, lighten the front end as much as you can. Get your butt off the seat, and weight back. Just like riding a dirt bike over rocks or a log. Problem is, we forget those skills when we ride on the street. Also impossible when you have someone on the back. If you never ride off road, then you are missing a part of your survival skills.
