Just did a day ride yesterday on my 07 FJR. Curious whats normal for the number of bars on the temp gauge. The outside temp was ranging between 106-110 and the bike had 7 bars showing for engine temp. Is that normal? The bike sure was pumping out some serious heat. Even my passenger was extremely uncomfortable. I thought the gen 2 bikes fixed the heat issue? None of my BMW bikes have ever put out nearly this much heat....that was downright uncomfortable.

It was 106-110 ambient temperature. That's damn hot.

But yes, the FJR will get up there in extremely hot ambient temperatures and/or in slower moving traffic. I've regularly seen 8 bars when in those conditions. And yes, it's hot. I try not to ride in those temperatures, it's just not any fun for me.

Keeping in mind you have your legs wrapped around an engine that burns fossil fuel to make horse power and heat is a by product of that process. On GenII machines they were able to move some of the heat away from the operator but the same amount is being generated by the engine. There is no fix unless you just don't ride when it's very hot .

Haven't seen over 4 bars on my Gen 1 yet.....and it hits the 90's here all the time.....
Pray you NEVER see 5 bars on your Gen I...4 bars is when the fan comes on, and if it doesn't cool down immediately to 3 bars, your Gen I is about to explode!!

And if you weren't familiar, 8 bars on a Gen II is equivalent to 4 bars on the Gen I. The number of "bars" was doubled from Gen I to Gen II.

it's hot on ANY bike when it's 106-110 outside. that usually means it's even hotter on the blacktop. wrap up, control air flow, hydrate, soldier on or take the car with the A/C.

Lol....my main concern was that the bike want overheating, and yes the fan was on. I like to ride rain or shine, hot or cold, makes no difference. I ride year round...motorcycle camping trips in 20 degree weather are normal.

Sac mike, I had done reading online and everyone seemed to say the heat issue was fixed....I guess I didn't expect it to be so hot if it was fixed. My 07 k1200gt, barely gave off any heat...and that's with more HP....

My Gen II will show 7-8 bars in 100-105 degree weather when I am at a stand still (damn red lights)... :dribble: but it will quickly drop to about 5 bars when back in motion. All is normal. When riding in 100+ weather, I am pretty sure that any large bike will feel like a BBQ between your legs. :p

Overheating is the top of the temp gauge, not the middle, or near the middle. In ANY vehicle.

A tad bit higher than you're used to... so what. It was friggin' 110!!!

If the fans come on and the gauge KEEPS rising, and doesn't stop rising, then you have an issue.

110 degrees is Cage riding with A/C on recycle & fan setting 4 weather. So no I've never seen my bike that hot before.

I have ridden with it that hot with my genII. I can say when moving not a big deal. If stopped it can get a little toasty. I always ride agatt so legs are ok but can definitely feel the heat when in stop and go and temp goes over 100. It has never been so uncomfortable I didn't want to ride though. I would think in shorts it would be a different story.

Some specific observations of my '07:

- moving: up to about 100* mine shows 4 bars. Any warmer and the bars increase with 6 bars at 106* (the hottest I've ridden). Fans come on at 7 bars and off at 6.

- stop and go: starts getting uncomfortable at 85*, brutal at 95*. Those fans pump out a lot of heat!

The outside temp was ranging between 106-110...

The bike sure was pumping out some serious heat....

Even my passenger was extremely uncomfortable....

that was downright uncomfortable....
It's not exactly healthy to be out in heat like that, couldn't the ride have been postponed?

The bike was doing all it could to keep the engine temp down, so yes I bet it was pumping out some serious heat.

Uncomfortable probably doesn't even accurately describe what you both felt.

The A/C in my truck works great on days like that.
