EGA are Honda Engineering North America's in-house die-makers. They are apparently tucked away in a small facility behind the mammoth Marysville Auto Plant in Marysville, OH. EGA oversees the design and production of all of the key stamping dies for Honda's North American-developed vehicles.

OK, but what does EGA stand for?

It has to be an acronym in English since the Japanese language does not contain those characters.

Do you suppose they just made it up to go along with HAM?

I'll have to run and check when I have a chance, but I think it was Rider Magazine this month has an article on the Marysville Plant from a tour given to the editor. They make Wings, the VTX1300 and VTX1800 in bunches of 20 bikes at a time. It seemed from the article production is no where near capacity. But it is state of the art..... frames and engines came from Japan, and plastics and assembly were done on-site.

Shame they won't be made in America anymore. The article went on to say the logic of producing the bikes here was that everybody involved in design and production to testing was in the States; in Japan it is hard to find the open spaces to wring a wing out.....and that design inspiration and needs for the American market would be more easily incorporated into the bikes if production was here.

I think this is really sad. And maybe I'm paranoid, but I have trouble believing jobs will be found for all.

Looking at their corporate history in the attached link, (https://world.honda.com/history/challenge/1...ng/text/09.html)

it appears that they establised a seperate EnGineering (EG) division in 1974. EGA therefore stands for Enginineering America.

I guess it must be Japanese logic.

+1 that, I just finished reading the same article. It also said the engine blocks are made at another plant here in the US. If I remember right, the only parts shipped from Japan are the engine "parts" like pistons, rods, cams etc. I donno how long it is from report time to press time, but it seems they (Honda) were pretty proud of that plant just a couple of months ago to suddenly decide to shut it down. Like some of the others, I wonder how valid this is. The numbers were really messed up though. Honda has produced something like 40 million bikes worldwide, but only like 950,000 in Maryland since 1979. Oh well...I don't ride a Honda. (Anymore)

Well right there is the problem...apparently Marysville needs to rename itself Marysmoto!

Been hearing rumors for quite some time on the VLX production being ceased altogather and perhaps even the 750 shadow (in Japan that is). No surprise here.

I alsways thought the VTX was a great value but apparantly hasnt taken off?

Ok...I got home and picked up the April edition of Rider magazine.

Says here that the Shadow 750s are their best selling cruisers followed by the VTX 1300.

The article about the Maryland plant says it opened in Sept. 1979 with 64 employees. Today it employees 600 and is 260,000 square feet. It is Honda's first factory for large motorcycles located outside of Japan. It makes the Wings, VTX 1800s and 1300s. As of article time, the plant had put out just over 950,000 bikes (500,000 of them being Wings), but in 2006, Honda produced 10 million units. The engine cases for the three models are cast and machined at the Anna Engine Plant in Anna, Ohio, the plastics are made on site, and the other engine parts are shipped from the motherland. AT article time, the plant had the capacity to produce 300 bikes per day, but were only making 120 due to time of year and "lowered demand."

It sounds like some of the info from some of the other forums is either a little exaggerated or plain wrong. I still can't find anything from Honda that says they are pulling out. Souds like they have lots invested in that plant to just pick up and give us the finger. Just sayin.

The article about the Maryland plant
I'm not sure if you just typoed it twice or if you really do think the plant we're referring to is in Maryland, but it's in Marysville, OH, which is just northwest of Columbus and about 50 miles as the crow flies from the engine plant in Anna.

There's a bunch of Honda-sponsored rider education and other facilities scattered around central Ohio, like a dirt bike school a bit north of Dayton, that I would hate to see go away along with the plant in Marysville. At least they're keeping the jobs there.

I don't care where it is produced, all i want to hear is that they are going to bring back the Blackbird to US, and making a 1000cc VFR!

Some things are strange. If one read between the lines, one could speculate that with the closure in Ohio, there may very well be completely new models coming out of the Japan plant for the '09's. New wing, perhaps?
